- Work, Puddifoot's: Check

- Friends: Check
- Home, cottage rented in Hogsmeade, shared with a few other shop-girls: Check
In her early childhood, it was a different story. She'd wanted to be an adventurer (showcased by her relentless wanderings and climbings about their neighborhood, disregarding whose property she was on), or a movie star (toddling around in Mummy's heels and acting out scenes from favorite black-and-white films), or something else exciting that got her in the public eye. But all of those dreams lack the stability Mary knows, in her heart-of-hearts, that she needs. It takes the building of much trust to hear the why of this change, but Mary lets in those who have earned it. For the sake of her privacy, please read on for a refresher only if you are among the few who have heard the story before.
The Players
- Mary, age 4, visiting her beloved cousin Alice
- Neil and Audra, a baby and anniversary on the way
- An unexpected storm at sea
Her parents were the embodiment of love. Their love of each other was undeniable, their love of their child just as obvious. She was told so often, after their passing, that their love for her was something that would never leave her, that the words fell on deaf ears before too long. It was love that brought the couple from different worlds together, but it was love that tore them from the one they shared. In celebration of an upcoming wedding anniversary, and prior to Audra being too far along in her pregnancy to enjoy the trip (or so Neil had optimistically claimed in order to convince her to come along), a sailboat was rented and a room at a shoreline hotel was booked. Ocean view. Despite inclement weather on the horizon, they left their daughter with family, and set out for a romantic sail...
The details of events happening on the water are unknown, the police report full of conjecture, but the results had never made Mary want to know more of the truth. She didn't want to know the disaster's catalyzing moment. She didn't want to know how Daddy's calm and reassuring demeanor changed when he realized the danger they were in. She didn't want to know Mummy's last words. She didn't want to remember the panic of her aunt and uncle when the authorities arrived, the screams coming unrecognized from her own mouth. She wanted to forget packing up her room while strangers and family tore apart the rest of her home. She wanted their funeral to be someone else's memory. The child did her best to keep her wandering mind in check. To fit in to the new life she found herself in, raised alongside her cousin Alice in the safety of her aunt and uncle's home.
The kids in her new neighborhood and school were blunt and crude, the parents full of pitying glances. When she couldn't find the way to make them stop, Alice was never far behind to back her up with words or fists. The years between the accident and Hogwarts were long; trying to deal with the sudden changes in her life led to multiple outbursts to her aunt and uncle (for they were not replacing her parents), mean-spirited kids tried to pull her down to their level, but she tried to keep her chin up and a smile on, like her parents would've wanted. By the time Hogwarts came, Mary was ready for another fresh start. One where people didn't know her history, one where she could be side-by-side with Alice again. Thankfully the Sorting allowed it, and Mary let herself feel the empowerment of her new House.
Gryffindors were daring - the friends she made here would never leave her bored.
Gryffindors had nerve - if there was a day she couldn't stand up for herself, her housemates would stand for her.
Gryffindors were chivalrous - in a world full of cruelty, how lovely was it to be bound to such stand-up people?
Hogwarts was a place to distance herself from the labels of her past, and forge her own future. She could be a new Mary, one she grew to be proud of. She was sociable with any classmate who treated her with decency, willing to give anyone a chance who didn't have the tells of the cruel-hearted she'd run into already. (There were bullies among the wizards and witches, as she found out all too soon despite careful avoidance.) She kept her heart open, delving into romance novels once she was old enough to notice the boys turning into young men around her, and asked one to Hogsmeade or dances if she wasn't asked first. While she knew too well love could make people turn a blind eye to danger, she trusted her judgement to keep her out of trouble. Besides heartaches begotten from falling too quickly, but those are stories for another day. She learned enough from classes to be a proper wizarding citizen, but knew that Ministry or subject-specific work wasn't end-game for her. Mary fell in love with a place that promoted the feeling so unabashedly, and began work at Madam Puddifoot's during school. Now graduated, she's got her eyes on the top job there. The teashop deserves to be revitalized, to be as upscale as it is adorable. And while she seeks her own happy ending...why not try to help others find their own along the way? Now that she's of age and the inheritance left by her parents can be accessed...after paying her aunt and uncle back for the years of care, why not use more to buy the teashop, or open one of her own? Her own great love was coming, surely, but until then - and after - she had a shop to care for, and people to help.
That's a good girl, Mary. Chin up, smile on.
