Back Story:
To finish last or to finish second, was there really a difference?
By being born a second son, Regulus Black was at a disadvantage from his first breaths, but that didn't last long.
While he'd never put himself at competitive odds with his brother, at any perceived foundering of Sirius's, their parents turned to him in praise. He learned early how he was expected to behave, even if what he wanted was to play around with his brother, to have reckless adventures, to pursue who he wanted to pursue. The innate rebelliousness to the boy was often shut down, only brought out in the safety provided to him by Sirius. Sirius, who brought attention onto himself whenever he saw Regulus's flirtations put onto someone their parents would not approve of. Sirius, who had wanted to take him with him to the Potter house. Sirius, who made sure they saw each other during their school years, even when he'd left the rest of their family behind.
With Sirius removed from Grimmauld Place, Regulus had less peacekeeping to attempt than he'd had in his younger years. But he'd learned from his brother's example what not to do if one wanted to stay in the family. And despite the wrath that his father had within him, and despite the conditional love of his mother, Regulus didn't have it in him to want to leave. They were his parents - they'd raised him, provided for him, and wanted the best for him. It was his duty, wasn't it, to become someone they were truly proud to call a son?
This drive to be the best undoubtedly led to his successes within Slytherin House. He joined the Quidditch team in his third year, and in a prime position for glory, at that: Seeker. His Head of House was eager to bring him into the revered Slug Club, but not as eager as the boy was to be wanted. His desire for company and good conversation has led to many an engaging night within their otherwise dour common room, and Regulus does not count himself short on friends. He's dedicated time and effort to his coursework and study, while most come as easily to him as they do to his brother, and has found himself most enjoying Transfiguration, Potions, Defense Against the Dark Arts, and Charms. Quick with wit and proven clever by classes and bouts with foolish challengers to the Black name, he's proud of the mark he's so far left on Hogwarts.
It was also in his formative years that he heard a name spoken with reverence, time and time again, by his parents and their friends. Lord Voldemort. Gone was who he'd been born, for the man of no name had built himself up from humble beginnings to become the most powerful wizard in the world. Regulus saw this man as the key to his continued success. For if he could attach his sails to that ship, he would stay in his parents' esteem, and rise in power of his own. And Lord Voldemort was right, was he not? If wizardkind was not meant to rule, why would they have powers that mudbloods stole, and muggles could not comprehend? And, certainly, if his cousins were involved, the work being done couldn't be as horrific as The Prophet made it seem. Joining him gave Regulus his greatest chance to be a hero, and when the opportunity came, he took it without hesitation.
True romantic love was something that young Regulus had yet to experience. However, in his opinion, he already had something better: a mutually beneficial agreement with Miss Bronwyn Nott. In an attempt to not fall into the same misfortune as what had happened between their family and the McKinnons, the Blacks had not pursued a betrothal for the younger brother until he was deemed mature enough to handle its responsibilities. But after a scheme hatched with Bronwyn, and heavily laid hints at home, his mother was more than happy to approach the Notts on his behalf to formally ask if Regulus could court their daughter. The friendship became a partnership, and as both parties pursue futures within the Dark ranks, the steady belief that the futures is theirs to create begins to shake...
