Above all else, Petunia loved her sister. And maybe that’s why she hated her so much as well.
Petunia remembered a time when they were young, when it was just her and Lily against their world and their parents. She’d been elated to have a little sister, and she had known from a young age that they would always be there for each other. She would have sworn to that back then. It was a picture perfect dream, until it wasn’t. Until weird things started happening around her sister. The earliest Petunia could recall that something was strange was when they’d wanted just one more cookie, and then there it had been. Floating.
She’d been so upset by it, and her parents hadn’t seemed to understand. It was Lily’s fault! She’d made the cookie float, and she wasn’t getting in trouble for being so strange. But it hadn’t stopped more strange things from happening, and Petunia was the only one who saw Lily for what she was, a freak. It was unnatural, these things that her sister could do. Making flowers bloom, incapable of falling out of trees, it was all wrong. And then Severus came along, and he ruined what little Petunia had left with Lily. He was a strange boy, with strange parents, and she didn’t like him one bit. She didn’t care that he was suddenly Lily’s new best friend, he was odd and he wasn’t good for Lily to be around. Just because he had the same weird abilities that her sister had didn’t mean she needed to hang around him.
When Lily received her Hogwarts letter, their parents were so proud. But Petunia? She was disgusted. There was a whole school of them, and it just wasn’t fair. Why did Lily have to be the special one, why couldn’t she go to this Hogwarts as well? It was then she devised a plan, and wrote to the Headmaster of the school. She was very polite in her request, to not only attend the school but to be a witch like her sister. Albus Dumbledore, another person she hated, had denied her request. That had been fine, until Severus had gone snooping and showed Lily.

Time went on, and Petunia found it easier to ignore her sister than to interact with her. Their parents were so proud of having a witch in the family, and Petunia didn’t know how she was supposed to compete with that. So she kept to herself when Lily was home for holidays, and did her best in school in hopes that she made her parents proud too. When she graduated, she moved from Cokeworth to London, pursuing a typing course. She was making it on her own in London with her flatmates, and she scored a clerical job at a company called Grunnings. It was there she met him, the man she was going to marry. Vernon Dursley.
He was so normal, and she loved it. He worked a normal job, lived a normal life, didn’t have to worry about things like having a witch for a sister. And she loved every part of it. So when he proposed to her in his mother’s sitting room, she immediately accepted. But it was then she knew she’d have to confess the truth about her sister, and she did. He took it surprisingly well, but he seemed most pleased that Petunia had little contact with Lily if she could help it. They were married soon after, and moved into 4 Pivet Drive.
