Back Story:
All Barty had ever known was that the law was the law and it reigned supreme and that he was to follow it to a tee. Dark magic was absolutely forbidden, and that he was to never embarrass his family. That’s about all Bartimus Crouch Sr. had ever taught him. He was never home enough for much else. Barty didn’t mind, his mother adored him and he got his way whenever he wanted. She thought his mischievous ways were endearing and always congratulated him on a trick well played, whether it was nasty or not. And he did play some nasty tricks. The Sr. should have known that if one told a child not to do something, it would be exactly what they did, but he always seemed to be lacking in the paternal department. With a sharp and inquisitive mind like the Jr.’s, it was bound to happen that he would get in trouble.
Hogwarts only made his behavior marginally better, he did get in less trouble, but it was mostly because he was better at not getting caught. The Professors at Hogwarts were not as forgiving as his mother. Though he craved the attention of his peers after a mostly solitary childhood, he wasn’t taken to as he had hoped. His own house was full to the brim of people of his like and he had no trouble finding common ground with them, especially his roommates, whom he took to be closer friends. But the rest of Hogwarts...people seemed put off by him. It took Barty a few years to hone in on why and fix the situation, or rather, disguise it. Decent people were so easy to manipulate. They only saw what you wanted them to see. Still, not all of his schoolmates -and more importantly his professors- needed to know the full extent of his growing curiously with dark magic, or his propensity for easy lies or any of the other characteristics people found unsavory. He would just hide them until he could make his own place in the world and show them all how wrong they had been to ever turn a nose up at him.
He did superbly well in all of his classes, he was more intelligent than most of the students in the school by far, and that garnered him some clout. There were even a few girls that could not escape his cleverness. Barty found that would be his niche, his mind. His looks might not be the pretty faces of some of the other boys, and his personality not as winning, but he could defeat every one of them in any magical task. He measured that to be more important than having a dazzling smile and bubbling laugh. Barty worked hard, and harder still to be the best, the brightest, but nothing seemed to attract his father's attention. By sixth year he had given it up and decided he would live for himself only. Instead, he used his formattable wit and cunning to begin carving out his future, using the connections he had been nurturing for years to gain a foothold into the outside world. A world not ruled by his father, or professors, or anyone else. A world in which he could learn all the things that Hogwarts and the law wouldn’t let him. School days were meant to end and laws were made to be broken.
