Dear Willa,

I miss having you here!

I know it’s selfish, and really I am proud of you for striking out into the world and being the brave soul I know you are, but I really wish you were here sometimes. I didn’t realize when they say a year, they mean the whole year. It’s only been a couple of months and it feels too long already. Tea times just aren’t the same without you, but we’re managing to remain upbeat. I know everyone else misses you too though, and we can’t wait to have you back.

Alright, enough of that. Now that you know how much I miss and love you, how are you? Are you well? Still running around with the ever helpful Hugo and Danick? I'm sure I've said it, but they seem like such lovely people, with such lovely names. Speaking of, any new names to add to my list of people to one day meet? I'm sure you are in no short supply of new friends! I can't wait to hear more about the people and the culture there. All the wildlife and herbage as well. I want to know everything. Have you taken any hikes? You must tell me all about them if you have! I wish I could see you now, experiencing all the glory of Brazil. I bet you look like sunshine.

All is much the same here at Hogwarts. Christmas is coming, so it's very cheerful around the castle, but still, not the same without you.

I won’t keep you long now. Write back as soon as you are able. Oh, send a leaf or small plant of some sort in your next letter, I’m starting a scrapbook for your time away.

Dear Viola,

I showed Willa your letter and I am positive that she misses you too. She did not however, read your letter, because I asked if you were pretty and she said yes. And it’s only fair that I get to write back to the pretty girl. I hope you don’t mind. Willa and Hugo are spending time together, and I decided I wanted to write back to you.

A whole year away from a friend is hard, but we are taking good care of Willa here. She is getting much better at the language, and I have asked to help me with my English some more. I am sorry your teas times are not the same, I know how very important tea is to those across the pond. That is the phrase, yes? Across the pond? It’s a very strange thing to say.

Willa is well and still running around with this, I am touched that she has included me in her letters back to everyone. Hugo and I are lovely people, and I am quite charming, I have been told. I think Willa is making friends with everyone here, because she is so nice like that. I am sure when she writes to you she will tell you all about her other friends. Who are not as cool as I am, I assure you. I’m very cool.

I hope your Christmas was very wonderful, I spent my winter holiday with Hugo and his family. They are all like family to me. I also went to see my abuela, who was very kind to me as well. As requested, I have included a pressed orchid for you. We have many beautiful plants here, if you want more all you must do is ask.

The tea was quite delicious!

What a surprising, incredible thing, receiving a letter from you instead of Willa. I confess to loving and missing my friend very much but hearing from you was somehow much better! Hello Danick, it’s lovely to finally ‘meet’ you. I’m Viola, as you know, and reading your letter made me laugh. Several times. And I will admit to reading it over many times before penning this missive.

It is strange to say I suppose if you’ve never said it before but yes you are correct, we are across the pond from one another. A very big pond. Too big to make visiting simple enough but I find I want to visit Brazil badly now, no matter how easy it is getting there. To meet you, my cool new pen pal, and see the world there. From what Willa writes, it is so very different from England where yes tea is very important. If we ever truly meet I promise to host a tea time just for you!

Teach Willa everything you can so she can come back and teach me, and tell her how well she’s doing helping with your English. At least on paper, it is very good. Did you speak it much before my friend arrived? Or was it a want grown from meeting Willa?

My holiday was quiet, as it always is, but very nice. I went on a hike further out than I had been before, it was exciting and cold. I’m happy to hear you enjoyed yours as well. Sometimes the family we choose is closer to our heart than the one we were born into, so I’m glad you have Hugo, you two seem like such great friends. And you’re grandmother, do you live with her? I wish mine were still around, I would for sure tell them about you.

Thank you for the flower, I’ve put it straight into the scrapbook. As well as a duplicate of your letter. Such a great thing as new friends being made deserves to be memorialized. I will ask Willa to send along flowers from her adventures, you I will ask...to send along a picture of you all. I wish to see your happy faces. In return, I will send more tea.

Mi sirenita,

It has been told to me that perhaps it was rude to steal Willa’s letter, but I did return it to her after I had written to you. I am glad to have made you laugh with my letter, it makes me smile to think of you reading my thoughts and enjoying them.

I would love to show you around Brazil if you were able to visit, it is a beautiful place. I am only here during the months we are at school, I live in Colombia the rest of the time. That is also a beautiful place, but I think these things because they are my home. I would love to visit Scotland someday and see Hogwarts, Willa says very nice things about it there. This summer I am accompanying my older brother on a trip in Europe, but we will not be going to England or Scotland, he has told me. I would very much like a tea time if we were to meet.

I have been teaching Willa about the best places to hide when you need to get work done but everyone is being loud. I always go to those places to play my music. I love to play for other people, but when I am working on a new song it is nice to have the space to myself. I have been learning English for two years now, since the first time I met an exchange student. I feel very lucky that Willa is here this year as she is helping me.

How was your holiday of love? I gave all my friends chocolates this year, and I hope the chocolates I included for you have not melted by the time they arrive. Hugo is my dearest friend, and he helps me make decisions about my blood family when they come up. But he is truly my brother, school would not be nearly as interesting without him.

I have also included a picture of the three of us, but it does not move because I haven’t learned how to process photos like that yet.

You cannot imagine how long I searched for the meaning of that term, the one you address me as in the start of your last letter. It took me ages, but the Hogwarts library never fails and at long last I tracked down a reliable book on foreign languages. My mermaid. You simply don’t understand how absolutely perfect that is, how could you, we’ve only just begun to know one another and yet, you seemed to know me already. I do love the water -the Black Lake and I are old friends- but more than that, I am a water sign! In short: I love it. We’ll have to talk to zodiacs and stars when we meet.

Willa did write me in response to her -borrowed- letter, so no harm no foul in my mind. I thought it was sweet, and you’ve made a new friend, so it can’t be -too- rude, can it? I’d love to hear more about Columbia, I’ve never been but now I find I'd really like to visit and learn more about where you’re from, and where you spend your time when not at Castleboro. I hear it’s full of culture and dance like Brazil! I love to dance, though I’m not sure I’m very good. Either way, I’d like to visit both...with you. We can have all the tea times we want!

You brother? Tell me more about him. He must be fantastic if he is taking you on a trip with him. I have a brother as well, he’s eighteen years older than me, he travels every summer even though he’s not been in school for years. George says summer is the only time to have really fun, it’s useless to travel any other time. I say any time is a good time for trips!

Thank you so much for looking after Willa. It eases my mind to know she had a good friend who has her back when we cannot be there. I’m sure she appreciates all of your assistance in her studies and I’m glad you appreciate hers in yours. Your English is very good as I’ve said. But mostly I’d like to hear about your music! I’ll add it to the list of things we have to do if we were to ever meet. You’ll have to play for me.

Valentines, was...uneventful but nice. I spent it with my friends drinking tea and eating chocolate. Your chocolates arrived in fine condition and were delicious! They tasted very different from the chocolate I’m used to, richer, it was nice. I ate them and thought of you. Willa has been telling me all about Hugo, he seemed the best of good guys and is there for the people he loves. You, and Willa, but don’t tell her I said that yet. What decisions does he help you with? Is it obvious I want to know more about your family? You don’t have to share if you don’t want to, but I am open to learning more about you. Write back soon.

P.S. I loved the picture you sent, I will be bold and say that Hugo is just  as Willa described him but you are far more attractive than she let on. And I know you didn’t ask but I’ve included a picture of me, I didn't make it move, someone did that for me, I can't work the spell right. It always comes out glitchy! I will find one of us Hufflepuff girls to send along later, I know I have one from last year around here somewhere...
