Back Story:
One of her earliest memories was not actually of her own life, it belonged to another, as so many of her memories often did.
She had been very young, barely coming into her magic, and yet she had seen into her mother’s mind as if it were her own. Had seen the flowing white robes and the arch of flowers, could smell them even, and feel the happy feeling it all evoked. That was the first thing she could remember in her life, getting married to the man she loved, only, it wasn’t her at all. It was all very confusing, for her parents and older brothers, but mostly for Helena, who could not yet understand how this ability she was ‘gifted’ with at birth would define her whole life. How the thoughts and memories of others would shape her in a way they could do few others.
Understanding would come with hard lessons.
Understanding would come with hard lessons.
At home her family grew used to her abilities over time; only her mother was truly proficient in blocking her out but her father and brothers did well simply not thinking things they didn’t want her to know when she was around. Or they kept their distance altogether, which was sometimes lonely and hurtful and invoked many tears -her mother always said she was far too sensitive for her own good- but Helena had had to grow used to that on her own. Which she did. Enough for her to have fond memories of her childhood as well as the seemingly endless days of being avoided by everyone - her family, the neighboring children, the family cat. Still, there were plenty of happy times with her family too, like her eldest brothers swinging her between them as they all walked along the coast. Fishing as a family. Holding a whole conversation out loud on her own with their inaudible thoughts as they laughed at her impressions of them, and her father reading her bedtime stories, and her mother putting braids in her hair. Even with all the rough bits, Helena thought it was still good; she was loved, and that’s what mattered in memories.
Soon though, the world intervened.
Her father was called away to work so much that Helena barely saw him, and her mother had taken to disappearing oddly. The Goldstein children found much of their time spent with their Nan and her pack of hounds -which Helena had no complaints about, she loved animals with all her heart, so much so that she begged and begged until she got her own canine. Adonis was her constant companion. Then, the last of her brothers went away to school and for an entire year, Helena felt well and truly alone so much of the time that she began to want to go to Hogwarts. Initially, she was terrified at the thought of so many minds calling out to her, there were hundreds of people in the castle, but then she began to think that anything was better than just her and Adonis and her empty room.
Turns out, it wasn’t much better, not at first at least.
Helena had a learning curve to catch when it came to spouting off everyone’s thoughts as she heard them, and having conversations where the other person was an active participant. It took her barely a year to realize her social faux pas but by then word had traveled and she felt like she had managed to scare off most of the school. It didn’t help that she was sorted into Ravenclaw where everyone seemed so severe and intense. She thought Hufflepuff or Gryffindor might have served her better where they were known for having big hearts like her own, even in Slytherin she might have garnered some sort of respect, but alas, it was the house of intellect for her and the reserved minds of her peers. In her first year and most of her second, she spent plenty of time alone and in tears, studying and missing Adonis for lack of anything better to do. But she also used that time to try honing her skills, something she had never worked on before. She read everything the library had to offer on the mind arts, which wasn’t a great deal, but by the third year, people’s thoughts were no longer jumping out at her and she was better equipped to focus on turning her life around in the castle. Naturally smart, naturally a mind-reader, naturally intuitive, everything she was came so effortlessly, it would be a mountain to climb to get people to see her for something other than those things. She was just a girl, who loved animals and charms and maps, who had a soft heart and a warm hug, and who really just wanted to have fun and be understood. So, she set about making people see someone other than the invader of thoughts.
It was hard work, but it was worth it.
Having at least one of her brothers around was helpful, but Helena knew if she wanted people to trust and like her, she had to do it on her own. She had to prove that she wouldn’t tell secrets, that she was a solid friend to have around, and for her living situation especially, she had to demonstrate that she was of benefit to her house. Her kind heart and quick wit was an asset and before long she had repaired some of her reputation and made a few good friends and plenty of acquaintances to soothe her need for human connection. She could tell people were still on guard around her but she was better at not letting it get to her. With her confidence rising and her smile shining, Hogwarts turned out to be some of the best years of her life. With friends and gatherings and extracurriculars, Helen filled her days with as much activity and love as possible. In fourth year she joined a few clubs -she wouldn’t be allowed home if she didn’t sign up for the Falmouth Falcons Fan Club- , in fifth she discovered her knack for dueling, and in sixth she found her niche in community service and by the end of her time at Hogwarts, she felt she had accomplished all she could and was ready to strike out into the world with new found confidence.
It seemed life already had some obstacles to throw in her way, but Helena found this time, she was ready to take them on.
She had barely graduated a week earlier when her parents announced their divorce. Her brothers were all moved away and were truly shocked at the news but Helena had admitted to seeing it coming. Quite literally. Her mother had left her guard down summer after fifth year long enough for Helena to read the affair in her thoughts. Which explained all of her odd disappearances and emotional detachment over the years, and why she always worked so hard to keep her daughter out of her thoughts. The former Ravenclaw was saddened that her mother seemed to care more for her secret life than the family she had helped build, but she had learned that passing judgment was not for her to do. So, Clarise left to be with her long-time muggle lover and Helena left to work at the Ministry, like her father and brothers.
One day she hopes to find a job where her natural talent for legilimens may be used for some good, but for right now it’s the Portkey offices for her.
