Back Story:
In the mountains of Scotland, on a farm away from it all, Marlene Ansley McKinnon was welcomed into the world in 1959. Her parents chose their home away from as many as they could, surrounding themselves with witches and wizards. They were pureblood, but Marlene never really knew what that meant, because it simply wasn’t talked about. It wasn’t as if her parents taught her that she was better than others because of her blood, they just never really seemed to mention it. Some of the kids she knew did talk about it, and had questioned her about it before they invited her to play with them. That was her life for nine years, until she got tired of things.
Her parents were wonderful, and they bought her whatever she wanted. They had many pets, she had her own horse, she got whatever she wanted for her birthday. But what she wanted to know was why they never saw muggles except their rare trips to Edinburgh. She demanded answers, and she didn’t like the one she got. That muggles, or those who were not pure of magical blood, weren’t worth talking to. She thought that was ridiculous, because magic was too beautiful not to be shared. She didn’t speak to them for a week, instead keeping to herself outside of the home or inside with her books. She knew all about Hogwarts, and she knew there would be people different from herself there.
The next three years were rocky, she rebelled against her parents views as often as she could. She couldn’t believe that the people she loved so much could be so narrow-minded, and when she was finally whisked away to Hogwarts she was happy to be gone. She found a group of girls her age on the train, and before they even made it to the castle she was sure she had some new friends. Her father had been in Slytherin, and her mother in Hufflepuff, but Marlene didn’t know where she would end up.
She watched Sirius Black (a pureblood name she recognized from events) get sorted into Gryffindor, and she felt for him - she’d heard enough about the Black family to know that this was an odd placement for him, but she never expected herself to be sorted into the same house. She didn’t know how her own parents would react to the news when she wrote them that night, but she didn’t care. She had four new girls to get to know, and that was more important to her. If she was going to spend seven years with them, she wanted them on her side. Her parents' response to her sorting wasn’t awful, they seemed proud enough - but the rift that had started forming three years prior was only growing while she was away at school.
By the winter holiday in her first, she was even more combative against her parent’s views of the world. She had pages of notes she had taken from her new muggleborn and half-blood friends about how wonderful the world could be with them in it. They listened to her, as far as she could tell, but she didn’t feel as if she was getting through to them. She was sad to leave to return to the school, but at the same time she was happy to be around her new friends that looked at the world through the same glasses she did.
Years went by, and Marlene involved herself in more and more muggle activities at the school, taking muggle studies and music classes when she could. She wasn’t afraid to throw a punch when someone insulted one of her friends, and she found herself in detention for altercations with the Slytherin’s fairly often. Her parents warned her she would get expelled if she kept it up, but she figured it was worth it if she was defending the right for everyone to learn magic.
In fifth year, something shifted in her home life. They moved from their home in Scotland to the outskirts of London, her father taking a job at the Ministry. Suddenly they were surrounded by muggles at home, and as her parents got to know them they started to let up on their beliefs. Friends who Marlene had never invited over were suddenly welcomed with open arms to her home, and her parents started actively fighting against the war that seemed to be raging around them and against the muggle world.
It made the next conversation she had to have with them easier, although she knew it wasn’t going to go over well. It didn’t take her long in her school years to figure out that she didn’t want to impress the boys, she wanted to impress the girls. She didn’t want to be betrothed to Sirius Black, even if she found him hilarious and a good friend. Telling them that she was gay was 100 times worse than telling him she’d been sorted into Gryffindor. Her mother cried, and her father didn’t talk to her for a week over the summer before sixth year. But the end result was better than she had hoped, because they sat her down a week later to tell her it didn’t matter who she loved, that they loved her.
She didn’t think life could get better after that, but she had two more years of school and big dreams to achieve. Her mother got a job as a Mediwitch at Mungos, her dad was getting promoted at the Ministry, and she was thriving at school. But the world was getting worse, and it was hard to ignore even from the safety of Hogwarts. She wanted to fight, but she wasn’t good enough at school to get into the Auror program like some of her friends aimed to do. After many talks with her parents, and her friends, she decided to aim for a position in the Ministry in the Muggle Liaison office. Surely there, she could do some good in their world.
Before she got the chance to interview though, Dumbledore approached her with an offer she couldn’t refuse.A chance to fight, to rid the country of those who thought those without pure blood were less than, and even though it worried her parents immensely, they understood the desire. They opened their home to the Order to be used for anything that they needed.
