WIZARDING APPLICATION
Maybe I don’t have a magic touch
Maybe I don’t have a talent as such
Just this heart with much, too much to share
VITAL INFO
Character Name: Malcolm (Mal) Wiley Rabnott
Date of birth: 15 July 1961, Scotland
Age: 17
Father: Graeme Rabnott (40, Gryffindor)
Mother: Mirren Rabnott (40, Hufflepuff)
Siblings: Fiona (15, Gryffindor), Archie (12, Gryffindor), Ross (8)
Bloodline: Pureblood
Back Story
"I want to hear the one about the Quintapeds! Please!"
"No no no - the blood-sucking bugbear!"
"The nogtails, Mal, the nogtails!"
"Why is it you lot never want to hear about the nice creatures? Let's think about that sometime. But tonight, we'll go to the Isle of Drear,* which is not all that far away from here, come to think of it..."
A cluster of first years gathered around a crackling fire, their little faces turned up at him to hear the same stories he'd grown up on, watching as their eyes grew wider and wider before giggles overcame them at the twists and turns he interspersed to offset the frights...These nights were the favorites of Malcolm's Hogwarts years. The dances were fun, and he wouldn't discount the moonlit hours of studying, and he enjoyed the discussions he and the others would have in their dormitory, but he wouldn't trade the evenings of storytelling for anything. It was through these evenings that bonds began, how the little ones grew comfortable coming to him with their worries and their questions and their triumphs later on, how the younger Hufflepuffs became comfortable being around each other too. As scary or as silly as the stories would become, as the children added their never-ending questions and gave their best guesses at what a flesh-eating slug sounded like as it glurped across the earth, the togetherness was what mattered the most. And getting to tell his mother that a new round of kids got to hear her stories.
As a member of the Ministry's Pest Advisory Board, within the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures, Mirren's stories were as legendary as the creatures she encountered on the daily. While Mal and his siblings and cousins couldn't accompany her on official business, other Scottish witches and wizards in the nearby village and neighboring farms knew to come to the Rabnott's if they needed a de-gnoming or a refill on doxycide. And as long as the pest had a XXX classification or lower, you could bet that Mirren was showing up with at least one of the kids. Between accompanying Mam on house calls and helping Dad with the family business (magical plants need proper tending!), much of Malcolm's youth was spent outside. This was a comfort and a habit he stuck with at Hogwarts as much as he could, taking advantage of the sprawling grounds and venturing into the Forest...just a bit.
Hogwarts provided the means of expanding his learning indoors too. The professors were incredible and had chosen to use their time and their gifts to teach the likes of him, even opening their doors for office hours and other extensions of learning, and he didn't want to waste the opportunity, and figured he should set an example for his siblings. The structure of school clicked for him, and while all of the subject areas didn't come easily, Mal put in the time to become proficient in as many as he could. This limited his social time, granted, but it was rewarding in its own way. And he was social, he was! He had Quidditch, and his clubs, and his fellow prefects, and his family. A big family when the cousins were involved, and while he'd started out at Hogwarts as the only Rabnott, as he enters his seventh year Malcolm is all but surrounded by the rest.
As he looks past this final year at Hogwarts, Malcolm knows he's bound for the Charms School in London. While he and his family had been educated at home growing up, he doesn't want to wait for the opportunity to teach until he has children of his own. So that means finding a way to make it in the city, fully away from everything around home for the first time, and in doing so...opening himself up to opportunities like running into the right person at the right time.
