WIZARDING APPLICATION
Severus Theodisius Snape
VITAL INFO
Date of birth: 9th of January, 1960
Age: 18
Father: Tobias Snape
Mother: Eileen Snape nee Prince
Siblings: none
Bloodline: Halfblood
Back Story:
Born to Eileen and Tobias Snape in early January, Severus’ birth was supposed to signify a new beginning for the Snapes who had had several rocky years together since they married in 1956. Tobias was a cruel man, happy to tear his wife away from her friends and the remaining family that had accepted her even after announcing herself a bloodtraitor by marrying a muggle man. The newlywed bliss was short-lived and soon the couple had moved away from the little social life Eileen had left in Blackpool, making their new home in Cokeworth. Tobias would yell and berate his wife as she tried her best to keep him happy and make a life for themselves. Out of desperation, Eileen convinced Tobias that they should have a child, assuming a baby would bring out Tobias’ softer side but Severus seemed to have the opposite affect on the man. Tobias began drinking more to cope with the stress of a crying child, which only seemed to heighten his anger which he directed at Eileen. As a small child, Severus was confined to his bedroom, a tiny room he shared with stacks of cardboard boxes full of old linens and dusty photo albums Eileen had not been permitted to unpack after their move several years earlier. Whenever Severus even dared to open his bedroom door, whether to dash to the bathroom or attempt to sneak something to eat from the kitchen between meals, Tobias would chastise the boy for interrupting his private time. During the day, Severus would be sent outside to play, not permitted back into the house until well after dark, even if it were raining, snowing, or a blistering heat that caused his unnaturally pale skin to turn a vibrant pink color.
Severus was seven the first time his father hit him. He had been playing in the garden when it began to rain. The wind picked up and soon enough thunder was cracking down the otherwise silent street. A loose tree branch broke and fell into the garden, scaring Severus who ran for the safety of his kitchen, tracking in muddy footprints that led his father right to him. Eileen continued fixing tea, pretending she did not hear what was happening behind her back in the very same room. At least it wasn't her. Severus went to bed without eating, his hands sore from scrubbing the floor with his toothbrush and his face warm with the bruise that would ensure he never muddied his mum’s kitchen again.
The only relief he had from his father was when Tobias went to work, an ever-changing schedule as the man was constantly between jobs, having been fired more times than Severus was able to count. The days when Tobias had no job to go to, having been laid off because of his volatile temper or having slept so long in his drunkenness that he missed his shift (and was consequently sacked), Sev found peace watching his peers play at a nearby park. He was never invited to play, often teased for his shabby clothes or the welts and cuts still visible under his shaggy hair, but there was one girl who had always seemed nicer than the others and he liked her. For weeks he called her “the little redheaded girl” whenever his mum asked where he’d been and professing her surprise that he had any friends, claiming to be happy that he was such a social boy. He wasn’t though, and it took a rather long time before Severus finally worked up the nerve to talk to the little redheaded girl after seeing that she had done accidental magic. She was a witch! He tried to explain it to the girl and her boring sister. After that, he felt more confident approaching her. He even learned her name; Lily. It was a beautiful name for a beautiful witch and Severus was pleased to be able to share his intimate knowledge of the wizarding world with her, as she had been born to a muggle family and had no knowledge of even the most basic of magical things. Severus promised to be her guide.
When their Hogwarts letters came, Severus was overjoyed, though he had learned to keep much of his happier emotions to himself. Smiles and laughter were not well received in the Snape household, but soon he wouldn’t have to abide by his father’s strict hand and his mother wouldn’t have to pretend to ignore the abuse her husband inflicted upon her only child. Ignorant to the lives of his parents as all children are, Severus didn’t realize that his mother’s tears at Platform Nine and Three Quarters were not about missing him over the upcoming school year, but fear for what would become of herself without Tobias’ whipping boy to take his frustration on. Unaware of the turmoil mounting at home, Severus sat happily on the Hogwarts Express with his friend Lily, talking excitedly about all the newfound freedoms they would have being in the world of magical folk. His heart nearly shattered when Lily was sorted into Gryffindor. He admitted to the Sorting Hat that he knew he was not brave enough to fit in with the house of the lion, and sure enough he was sorted into his mother’s former house; Slytherin.
He and Lily still spent plenty of time together, despite their different common rooms, but he grew jealous of her Gryffindor friends for all the time she was able to spend with them. He retaliated by trying to make his friends in his own house, a task he found difficult. Often the butt of cruel practical jokes from boys of all houses, Severus found kinship in a certain gang of young wizards. They picked on anyone they felt was beneath them, usually the muggleborns or the very poor. Severus was the lowest ranking boy in the group, even if no one – himself included – ever outright stated such a thing as fact, Sev knew it to be true but it was better than having no friends at all. Despite making friends, Severus spent much of his time alone, studying in darkened corners and trying to hide from the boys who had come to make his life at Hogwarts a living hell. In fifth year, James Potter and gang of Gryffindor gits played yet another heinous prank on Severus, pulling his trousers down in front of the entire school, Lily included. To make matters worse, Lily hammered yet another nail in his coffin when she started yelling at Potter about the incident, as if Severus was incapable of standing up to the bullies himself. He wasn’t weak as she assumed him to be, and he was more than capable of retaining his dignity without the need of a stupid mudblood!
She refused to speak with him after that.
The years following the incident were spent trying to apologize, to make it up to her, and hating her for making the embarrassing ordeal that much worse. His hatred for Potter and his mates only intensified when it became apparent that Lily held affections for James. Sev would no longer passively detest Potter, Black, Pettigrew, and Lupin but he began to actively plot their downfall. It only became that much easier when Severus was introduced to a man who called himself Lord Voldemort who promised evil men like his father would never again be able to hurt him. When the subject of Potter and Black was broached, Voldemort simply smiled and told Severus not to worry about the bloodtraitors. He was sold.
Following his graduation from Hogwarts, Severus took a position at the very school he had just left, as a professor’s assistant for Defense Against the Dark Arts. The staff never seemed to hold that professor long, every year a new DADA professor was announced and by the end of term they were gone for one reason or another. Severus thought he could change that, and taking on the position of apprentice would surely claim him the coveted role once he’d learned enough. His future appointment as DADA professor could be useful to the Dark Lord as well, and with Severus rising in the ranks he was sure to get a little helping hand when the time came. All he had to do was please Lord Voldemort, who had already infiltrated the Ministry of Magic, and then the professor position would be his.
APPEARANCE
Height: 5'10"
Hair: Black

Style/Other characteristics: Severus is used to wearing anything he can find that fits, so his clothes are often worn and on their last legs. He prefers dark, drab colors that don't make him stick out, preferring the shadows to the limelight.

TEMPERAMENT
Generally, Severus is unpleasant to be around and generally a frightening presence. He heavily favors Slytherins in his role as professor’s apprentice, which may seem unfair, but he finds himself protective of his snakes and the stereotypes they face. He is suspicious, constantly on-guard and not inviting of idle conversation or fancy claptrap; he much prefers to-the-point communication and not being jerked around like some tool.
Severus is a complicated and deeply scarred man who does not show his emotions easily, with the exception of anger, a trait he inherited from his father. He has a great respect for intelligence and selflessness, one a trait he knows well and the other something he wish he had more of.
