“Idealism in the young, I guess I’m saying,
is curiosity as well as goodness trying to express itself.”

Back Story
"This isn't working - I can't - "
"What's the one thing we don't do, Dorcas?"
"Quit."
"That's right, love, you can always find your way through. Take a moment, and try again."
Whether the task was reciting passages, completing memory games, performing a spell above her year - Dorcas would find a way through. As her parents always said, she was sharp, capable, and dedicated, so why should she accept anything less for herself than her very best? Looking back, she knows that she took things more literally than they could have meant, that they hadn't meant to put the kind of pressure on her that she put on herself. But as they were so high-achieving and well respected, how could she one day stand beside them if she didn't make herself equally as impressive?
She was a more tightly wound child than she had to be, entering Hogwarts with the single-minded goal of being the best in her year. Had she not been surrounded by the warmth and spirit of Gryffindor House, perhaps that inner coil would have loosened even less. But as luck would have it - not that she believed in luck - Dorcas found a home in the right place, with the right people. She is not fast to make friends, but once they are made, she is not fast to let them go. She holds her ideals just as tightly. Being raised among Ministry and literary circles rather than pureblood society meant more interesting conversation and people than she heard others of her "purity standing" discussing. A father in the Wizengamot led to an unshakable sense of right and wrong. A mother who studied the failings and successes of each side of the coin led to more questions than answers - but the knowledge that questions must be asked, and that determining the right questions to ask is the most important part of any endeavor.
In her pursuit to stand out in her year Dorcas was, admittedly, incredibly sour when she failed to receive a prefect's badge going into fifth year. She held her roommates in high regard - but who had beaten her? Her feelings on the matter were sorted after seeing Lily dealing with the first years so well, however, as she would've run out of patience on the first night. And as she realized that, without a prefecture to lose, she could be more outspoken than ever before. The switch had flicked, and she took joy in reading the level of exasperation on the faces of her professors - in pursuit of noble causes, of course.
Romantic relationships were not a high priority at school. School was the top priority at school. But Dorcas dipped her toe into the dating pool from time to time. When she was young, she dated a boy for far too long. He'd been a good friend beforehand, she loved being in his company, never had tired of swapping stories or simply sharing their study tables. For a time, it was nice to have someone to go to Hogsmeade with, to rile up about Quidditch, to try and learn how to do nice things for. So maybe if she just - tried harder and paid more attention to the little things about him that she'd liked at first, she'd want to hold his hand as much as he wanted to hold hers.
Seeing her friends so much happier - or, at least, so much more engaged - in their own relationships eventually made her end her own. She'd be lying if she said a big part of that wasn't inspired by observing Marlene with her Hufflepuff girlfriend, even if she couldn't admit it then. But when she could, and when she'd given herself enough talking to's to do something about it, asking Emmeline to Hogsmeade finally gave her the butterflies everyone had been talking about for so long. While relationships since the first have been short-lived, her crushes haven't, and timing has been killer. Living with your crush when your crush has a girlfriend is stressful, to say the least, and when Marlene returned for seventh year single? Dorcas was over the moon. For the start of the train ride with the girls, at least. But she wouldn't go after someone when that person was so hung up on someone else, that wouldn't do anyone any good. Especially when they still lived together, and if Marlene didn't return her feelings and was heartbroken over Bridget, well - that would just be too awkward, wouldn't it? So she settled in to wait. And wait. Until the next time they were on the train, when she couldn't wait any longer.
And now? Dorcas is off to the Order, to the Ministry, with her girlfriend. While the future is murky, she believes they will come through it in the end. The world needs people to stand up, to fight, to search, to demand - and as long as she can use her legs, wand, mind, and voice, that's exactly what she'll do.
