Back Story:
Being the first means being the greatest. At least, it did in the Fudge household.
Born almost two years before her brother, and three years before her sister, Violet almost remembered a time when her parents' attention wasn’t split between the three of them. Even as a child of four, she knew she wanted to get back to being the star of the show. Not only for her parents' attention but also because she was the one who had to show Rufus and Charlotte how to live life.
She had always been ambitious, and her childhood was no exception. When she was old enough to fire an arrow, she asked to be put into archery lessons. It was one of her first loves, and one of her first tastes of competition. Violet was always determined to be the best, and the awards she won in competitions started gathering in their household. She was given praise, and she made sure her siblings knew it. Because if they knew how good she was, they would also be high achievers.
But they didn’t compete with her, not as she wanted. Sure, sometimes she was jealous when their parents' attention shifted from her to one of them, but she yearned for them to try as hard as she did to be perfect. Did they not feel the same pressure she did, to be excellent? Maybe it was because Rufus and Charlotte were closer in age to each other than her, but she felt disconnected from them. Like they were living two different versions of life in the Fudge household.
But her eleventh birthday came, and in the September that followed she was sent off to Hogwarts. It was something she had been looking forward to for so long, and she was determined that she was going to be the best while at school. She was sorted into Slytherin like her parents had been. She excelled academically, always at the top of her class. She was particularly good and fond of charms. She took up violin in the music program, she worked on her needlework, and she was the best. Always the best.
After her first year, she came home with a new passion she wanted to pursue, falconry. A hobby she had learned about through eavesdropping on the older Slytherin girls, Andromeda and Alecto. She wanted to try it, and she had an argument ready to get her parents to agree. It was easier than expected, and she found she enjoyed it. More than being at home, with two siblings who didn’t seem eager to hear her tales of school.
Her second year at school was just as good as the first, and she was proud of herself for making connections with other pureblood families - something she was learning at school was worth being extra proud of. Her roommate and friend was Dora Parkinson, she had befriended Narcissa and Andromeda Black, and bonded with Alecto Carrow over a love of falconry. She had high hopes for her third year when Rufus would be joining her at school. Once they spent time together in the castle, just the two of them, surely things would be better between them.
But when that fateful day came, Rufus was sent to Gryffindor. She could have understood any other house, but Gryffindor? Still, she held onto hope that being in competing houses would encourage Rufus to compete with her, and prove to their parents who could be the best. He didn’t care about winning the attention of their parents or being at the top of the class. And he had the most annoying friends. It was this year she bonded even more with Narcissa, both knowing the struggle of difficult siblings all too well [10-minute version xD].
The following year Charlotte joined them at school, and Violet felt her excitement renew. She was more like Charlotte than Rufus, her younger sister was an avid reader and far more mature than their shared brother. The only word she could use to describe seeing Charlotte join the Gryffindor table was a disappointment. Was she really that different from her siblings? She knew then it was no use, the two of them didn’t need her. They never had, they had each other. At least Violet knew that Charlotte would excel in school, although her younger sister never seemed to want to make a competition out of it.
Fifth year came the honor of a prefect badge, and her parents were elated. She may not have had her siblings, but she had Narcissa - and Narcissa had a thing for Lucius Malfoy, who happened to be Head Boy that year. It was a year spent talking her best friend up to Lucius, and exchanging gossip with Cissa about the things he would talk about. She hadn’t thought about dating until her fifth year, too focused on being the perfect child to take her own feelings into account. But her friends were being betrothed or talking about it. She’d never thought to consider that this was something her parents should have been doing for her. She decided she should just take matters into her own hands, and set out about trying to figure out a relationship.
Unfortunately, the only boy she’d even had a crush on was Nicholas Avery, and he had graduated years ago. But her friendship with Lydia Avery and the other younger girls was important to her, and she would not jeopardize those friendships simply to date Lydia’s older brother. So she turned her attention to some of the younger boys - (she was simply NOT going to date Sturgis Podmore) - and successfully found someone who thought she was pretty.
It didn’t last, as she was more dedicated to being perfect at everything else to focus on a boy. It was okay though because she made her parents proud on her own. And so she spent the rest of her fifth and sixth year padding her impressive resume and was so positive that in her seventh year she would be Head Girl. But that letter never came that summer, instead, a shiny prefect badge had shown up with her Hogwarts letter. Through gossip, she came to learn that the positions had been awarded to Alice Fortescue and Frank Longbottom.
She was seething, and life at home wasn’t going well. The disappointment from her parents was evident, and it was all too much. The day before school she broke down, throwing things about her room and screaming. She yelled at her siblings, the pressure of being the perfect child cracking her demeanor. How could they do this to her for years? Did they not understand they were putting all the pressure of making something of the Fudge name on her? They were pathetic and unskilled, and not worth anything. She locked herself in her room before dinner and didn’t emerge until it was time to leave for the train the next morning.
She didn’t talk to them the entire trip to King’s Cross, and she left them as soon as they were on the train. This was her first year without Narcissa, and what the worst year to be without her best friend. Still, she had the Medusas and catching up on their summers and the gossip soon had her mind off her problems and back on what mattered, her own success. She graduated at the top of her class, with more than one job offer from the Ministry and a reward from the school for her excellence in charms.
In the end, she chose the Obliviator office, training under Oscar Vance. She found him to be quite competent in the job, but she also felt he was a little annoying at times. But life was good for her, and she thrived. She had her own flat in London, the interest of older men at the Ministry, and an open invitation to the Malfoy Manor whenever she felt like popping by. And she was away from her family, which was the most important thing to her.
She attended Rufus’ graduation from Hogwarts, but not because she really cared that he had managed to not get expelled. News had gotten to her that Charlotte was dating and had stood up to Rufus. She’d sent Charlotte a letter that evening, inquiring for more information. But the goal of her attendance had been to meet Remus, and she seemed to be the only one in her family that cared to properly introduce herself when Charlotte introduced him. Remus Lupin seemed nice enough, and Charlotte seemed to like him a lot.
She avoided lunch with them all though and instead went to find the Medusa’s to congratulate them and hear where they were all headed in the real world. She had been elated to hear they all had ambitions they were following, and she made sure they knew her door was open if they ever needed it. Since then, she has been spending time at her job, and with her friends. Lately, someone has even caught her eye - Evan Rosier II.
