Back Story

Life began in Northern Ireland, the hometown of his father's family, and life was wild, and life was good.

The town was busy enough that Xeno - or, more likely, whoever's charge he was under - had to worry for cars when crossing winding roads, but quiet enough for trees and streams to play in undisturbed. Mother was home then, when he and his sisters were, to guide and to supervise their learning. Reading and writing led to dramatic plays written and acted out together, maths into cooking and amateur potioneering, astronomy into navigation and starlit treks, gardening into dissection and edible plant identification - the subject wasn't the point, what one could then do with the subject was, and Xeno's sponge of a mind and curious hands and feet took it all in. Gwendolene left for Hogwarts first, and returned with books and talks of marks and sometimes even brought new friends with her, and in her fifth year left "Gwendolene" for Gwen and a shining badge. The books were always of most interest to Xeno, but free rein to them was cut off after that first winter holiday and he had marked them up with questions, to her grave dismay.

Pearlette had as many questions as he did, drawn to the spirit that connected living and nonliving things. Dirt and beetles, pond scum and raindrops, frogs and clouds - she could find a pattern, a purpose, in whatever they found. How she knew it was true, Xeno never did know, but she believed so wholly that he almost felt badly in questioning her. Even so, when Gwendolene's books became hers, they went through them together, quills in both their hands.

Home was quiet after Hogwarts began for her, and he often slipped away from lessons to be on his own. It wasn't meant in offense to their mother, whose company really was quite lovely, but if he could practice his cursive and whatnot at the friary and castles, the salt spray of the sea in his face, why wouldn't he? At least while he was there, he had a chance to learn from the ghosts who appeared to him in the forgotten halls and lamented about the state of the place, and warn the muggle tourists away from the dungeons, for the Red Caps weren't friendly and wanted the disturbance. Why this sort of thing got him into trouble, the young boy didn't quite grasp. He was telling the truth, and he was only trying to help, and shouldn't the tour guides know better, and even if they were a bit put off by him, wasn't that better than them coming upon something truly scary? His absence allowed Mother to return to her first love of books besides, and while the market for editors of wizarding books was small in their little corner of the world, there was always at least one that she was working on late into the night.

Through those years, there were too many hushed conversations after bedtime that he never fully heard. Discontent among the people, dangerous ones in both worlds, trouble brewing and trouble brewed. But Xeno read, the muggle and wizarding papers both, and started to see patterns like Pearl did, and asked. Their reclusive home on the outskirts of the farm of his father's family, rows and rows of peaceful trees and chittering bowtruckles - it felt of another world entirely from what the papers said. His parents were honest, as they were when he asked of wand lore and what made the brooms fly and why people found him odd when he really didn't. They stayed because it was home, and the darkness would pass, and they were hidden.

When it came time for him to attend Hogwarts, he went eagerly with marked-up books in Gwen's first trunk that was now his own. Xeno found another home within Ravenclaw, and was glad to have Pearl with him there through most of his time at school. But there were new friends to be made, as both sisters assured him, in this house of curiosities and questioners. It took some time, and prodding from his family to join the Quidditch team when it seemed like close friendships were just not happening for him. As he nears the end of his time at this castle, Xeno is fond of a fair few, and feels the fondness back. He has opened himself up to dating in recent years - a new curiosity in itself - and has not yet found a love of his own. His eye, however, has been on an old friend, and he has even taken up knitting (rather horribly, admittedly, but getting better) in the effort to spend more time together. Coming into their seventh year - if there ever was a time to be decisive, it is now, and Xeno is ready to put pretense aside.

School has meant endless new things to learn and dive into, and many opinions, and many pranks - more often he is the subject of them than on the other side, but he tries to not let it bother him - and many arguments. Xeno believes and believes fiercely, and cannot abide those whose minds are closed. He understands the want for evidence, but if others cannot prove something untrue just as he cannot yet prove it true - what is the difference?

The greatest culprits of true untruths, however, are beyond the confines of Hogwarts.

It is much too much, and many, too many, are all too willing to go along. He will not be one of them, and a plan is forming on how to spread real truths to the world once school is done...
