Back Story
From a young age, Frank knew the importance of presentation.
He was a Longbottom, his mother would proudly declare, as his father rolled his eyes. The name meant something more than itself, for reasons the boy didn't quite understand. But nevertheless, the name was important to his mother, and his schooling was important to his father too, and so Frank learned how to behave when he was around others. He was well-mannered, attentive, curious but never impolite, quiet at the first pointed look. He learned his letters and his maths, his please-thank-you-pardon-me's, to keep his elbows from the dining table, to always help when someone needed it, how to stand and to always get the door or chair for a lady and how to craft a letter...There seemed to be a right way to do every little thing, which meant there was a wrong way for everything too - right? The progress with lessons in school was monitored at home, and even through he had a tendency to daydream in class - despite his best efforts - he learned quickly enough. Unfortunately, Frank did know what "Longbottom" meant at school, and it didn't exactly invite the other children to him, no matter how friendly he was and how closely he tended to the rules they learned. Dreams of summers flying with his friends sustained him, as did visits with his cousins.
An empathetic child, he learned even more through observation than direct lessons. Father had a uniform to put on for school too, and when he changed his clothes, he was simply Frank's father again. The man who had a keen eye for the right time on a practical joke, the one person in the world who could get away with teasing Mother, instead of the one with the responsibilities of the school on his shoulders, who had to keep the children in line. Mother's uniform was different, as it didn't seem to matter what she was wearing, she was always ready to quiz and correct. She pushed him, so that he would become the best version of himself - like any of her students, it was a personal mission, and she would not lose.
And so, Frank learned how he was supposed to be.
It wasn't so bad - rules were important so that they could all get along together, so it was important to know and follow the rules. And when the right ways had become habits, he was corrected less, his parents were happier, and things were simpler. And he could make his own fun during the year, taking advantage of what free time he was granted to explore hobbies approved for a Longbottom, and look forward to his summers.
All of this preparation had Frank thinking that Hogwarts would be more of the same. He could not have been more wrong.
Sure, this new school had rules - but the rules were broken, often by those in his House, and notices of detention were sent home and Howlers arrived in return, and the rule-breakers survived. And while his fellows from etiquette classes were here too, there were so many more new people to meet, from all parts of Britain and from all kinds of families. Bit by bit, Frank felt himself start to relax. For in this new world, many of the rules of his childhood started to feel...arbitrary. There were some that Frank chose to keep for himself - he would keep his words kind, lend a helping hand, know right from wrong - and in choosing them, and letting go of others, he began to open himself up to those around him with the candor his childhood lacked. Friendships came easier then, and by third year the new Chaser would have his dorm in stitches with an impression of himself in first - back and joints stiff as he extended an arm in greeting, phrasing genteel as he spoke banally of the weather.
He took to Transfiguration and Herbology, and after an initial struggle in Defense - practicing spells on his classmates just didn't feel right - Frank flourished. His prefect's badge came in fifth year, and so came many evenings on patrol with his fellow prefects. Including Alice Fortescue. Conversations had over patrol and as they helped each other in subjects they were struggling with, in pursuit of their common goals to become Aurors, turned them from acquaintances into friends. It wasn't long before Frank felt like he'd always known the girl, that she had always been the first to go to with news - good or bad - or to ask an opinion of. From their first classes, he'd had respect for her as a classmate; since hearing of her intervening with bullies on behalf of her little sister, his opinion of her rose; with the love she showed her friends, he hoped to become one of them. Frank's feelings towards her progressed before he quite realized he was on the way into being in love with the girl, and he all but begged their Head Students to keep matching them up on patrols in sixth, if only for an excuse to spend time with her. He asked her for a date midway into the year, and the pair has been together ever since.
Seventh year brought new badges to them both, and a new sense of confidence in himself. While his parents proclaimed that they had expected nothing less, and Frank credited them with giving him a leg up - he had taken ownership for himself for years now, and had earned this honor on his own merit. It was his crowning achievement, until being approached for entry to the Order of the Phoenix by their headmaster, and gaining acceptance to an accelerated Auror program. Thankfully, he was not alone. He and Alice decided to do it all - together. Completing their Hogwarts journey, and embarking a new one that was theirs. With a promise - to Alice, and to her family, it was only proper - that he planned to ask her to marry him, he invited her to live with him in the guest house on his family's estate. One whirlwind of a year later, and they had graduated the program, beginning active duty in both organizations - and paused. To affirm so many promises made and meant, in witness of their most loved ones, they became Frank and Alice Longbottom. A blessed day during which the groom, despite the training of his youth, could not compose himself enough to address the crowd. The whole of himself was for Alice, and her for him, and life continued - together...
