Back Story: Narcissa gets what Narcissa wants. This is how it has always been, and it is how it will always be, if the young woman has any say in it. Her need to acquire began as a child - a horse or a new instrument and lessons to go along with them didn’t seem like large things to ask for - but she soon learned that she needed to do more than just ask straight out in order to have her desired gain. She needed to be subtle, deliberate - convince whoever was in charge that it was his or her idea to begin with, and then reap the rewards. Attribution of the idea’s origin means nothing to her as long as she receives what she deserves.

Although this began with material things - resulting in a magnificent wardrobe and intricate playthings - as the girl grew up she realized she could use her skills in gaining more. Her most successful gain was the hand of one Lucius Malfoy. She had fallen for the handsome prefect and Head Boy at Hogwarts - he was Annie's age, so they didn't overlap much, but she had a good intuition about this sort of thing - and as his family was similar both in status and belief as her own, it was fairly simple to plant the idea of Lucius being the one for her into the minds of her parents. Andromeda had already made such a poor match that they were eager to jump on the opportunity at securing a proper mate for their youngest. She was permitted to date him during her last two years of school, and had been correct in anticipating of their suitability. He became surprisingly affectionate, she as well, and the two were married at a lavish affair shortly after she graduated. Theirs is a relationship of mutual respect, and they have become attuned enough to each other that she can direct or calm him with a simple look. She enjoys little more than spending time with him - quiet time at the manor, unquiet time at the manor, dancing, shopping, going to museums, going out to eat, accompanying him to Ministry parties - although that time is becoming more restrained as he’s pulled in deeper to work with the Dark Lord, something she is not quiet about being irked by.

Narcissa was happy to play the family’s darling in her youth, using her innocent face to her benefit in getting out of situations. She’s still seen as the baby of the family, something she does not particularly mind - they expect less of her and have less scrutiny of her actions than her older sisters’. Bella was perfect and made sure everyone knew it; Annie was unusual, but special in her own way; and Cissa was their sweet little girl, modeling herself after her older sisters, amusing them with her mimicry. As Bella progressed through Hogwarts, Narcissa saw her grow more intense in her beliefs, but has never feared the eldest Black sister. She would never harm her, she was sure.

Andromeda, however -

When Andromeda married that mudblood, something the three girls had been warned against for life, Narcissa - for her own safety - had to follow Bella’s lead. She cut ties with Andromeda out of necessity; it was horrid, what Annie had done, betraying their family like that. There was little that Narcissa truly valued, but she did value her family.

Andromeda had broken their family apart. While Bella vowed to never speak of her again, and her parents made it as if there had only ever been two daughters, Narcissa was torn. She hated Andromeda for what she had done - selfish as she was herself, she would never have acted in this way, she knew with the certainty of a fourteen-year-old. But...she loved her Annie.

She adapted Bellatrix’s affects about the situation, but in hearing about the birth of her niece a few years later, the girl could not resist trying to reconnect. It took some convincing, but when she’d finally gotten her way - as she always did - when she was holding that special little girl in her arms, she knew that it was worth the risk. It became her best-kept secret, and she keeps up spotty connections with the Tonks family today.

Narcissa views the Dark Lord as a necessary evil, and while Lucius and Bella and many others are trusting him, the young Mrs. Malfoy has her reservations. She has heard the stories from Lucius of battles gone awry, Death Eaters maimed by the man himself - he is leading them, luring those she loves, into danger. So while she will never be anything but respectful and polite in his presence, she will not fight his battles for him or stick up for him in company, preferring to stay silent - as these sorts of men take the silence of a woman as acceptance, she knows she’s safe in adapting this measure, and would rather he think her submissive and mute than clever, as she truly is. Lucius is the only . A believer that nothing is certain, Narcissa has secretly and steadily kept documentation of Lucius’ legal work in the Ministry in the chance that his following of the Dark Lord comes to bite him. She will not be letting her dear husband go easily, and if she can protect him in any way she will.

She does not waste energy in pleasantries, saving her affection for those few that she loves. She is aware of her superiority, and makes sure that it does not go unnoticed. Narcissa has learned to play the game of society, the game of her double life - the wife of a respected Ministry employee, the wife of a Death Eater - quite well in order to keep Lucius and herself safe. This is the family that she will make sure stays together, and she cannot wait to be a mother, to raise a child to love and be loved by.
