Remus felt relaxed, talking to her about his family. James and Sirius didn't ask a lot of questions, although they had meet his parents a while ago. After his friends had found out his secret, and he no longer needed to lie about his mother's condition, things had been easier. They had invited the boys over for a visit in the summer. It was a treasured memory to Remus, having all three of his best friends at his house to hang out. Accepting him for what he was, his parents had been happy he had friends that would. His mother spoke so highly of James, Sirius, and Peter. In fact, when it came to discussing family he felt like he'd only really talked with Peter about his parents before. It was a nice feeling, telling her stories about his childhood.
He gave a shrug at her statement, not sure how he could explain anything further without giving away secrets, "It's hard being a muggle, married to a wizard. Especially with how society views her. But she manages just fine. I'm sure she wishes I wrote more letters though," he joked. He wrote to her at least once a week, keeping her updated on how school was going and assuring her that he wasn't getting into too much trouble with his friends. Of course, this week he would be writing to her about this date, although he hoped his mother didn't get her hopes up. Last time she had talked to him about ever dating she mentioned grandchildren. She was crazy if she thought that was ever going to happen.
As she talked about her parents, he caught a shift in the way she spoke. He supposed he didn't know what it was like, being in a family such as hers. She was the youngest child in a pureblood line, and so incredibly different from her older brother. He gave her a smile as she mentioned that it was all right, feeling in his gut that maybe it really wasn't. "The Centaur Liaison Office sounds pretty cool. My dad does a lot of boring things at the Ministry," he joked. He wasn't really sure what his dad did, since they hardly ever talked. Whatever it was, it was enough to insult rabid werewolves. "Your sister is older, right? I don't have any siblings so I guess I don't understand what it's like." He wasn't sure what to say. He felt like he should direct the conversation away from her family, since she didn't seem as comfortable with the topic.
He squeezed her hand lightly, trying to come up with another topic of conversation. He was content just sitting her and watching her talk about anything, she was beautiful and he was lucky. "So uhm. What's your favorite class this year?"

As he elaborated on his mother's hardships, Char nodded along, kicking herself a bit for not thinking about that obvious dynamic. Having been raised in the wizarding world and wizarding world alone, save a few jaunts to muggle bookstores when the family's store of books got stale, she'd not observed many families who weren't pureblooded witches and wizards. But, of course, if the parents were from two different but interwoven worlds, there would naturally be some hardships. But it was obvious that Mrs. Lupin loved her son, and that the feeling was mutual, even though her son possessed a quality she could never have. So she grinned at his joke, replying lightly, "I can't see you neglecting to write - how often do you keep in touch?'
"It seems to be interesting work, yes," Charlotte agreed as he spoke about her father's work. She didn't know too much about it, but having time with centaurs of different lands had to be a neat experience. Maybe next time she was home she'd try and get more stories out of him...But for now she was here with Remus, and had to smile as he playfully spoke about his own father's work. "Yours is in the Ministry too?" You shouldn't be surprised, the majority of us wind up there, it seems. "I wonder if we were ever dragged along to the same holiday party," she said with a slight laugh. "And yes, she is. Violet graduated a few years ago from Slytherin, got married this pasts summer. And having siblings, it's - ah - well, I'd imagine it's close enough to how you and your friends are, except there's no going home without them," she said, being hit later with how resentfully that could be interpreted. "That sounded wrong, I mean - I love them, I do. They can just be a bit much. Or the opposite."
Char was quite glad when Remus seemed to have caught the hint that family wasn't her favorite subject, and was grateful for that squeeze of her hand. She took a look up at him, smile reappearing as she spoke. "Well, History's always been a favorite. Binns needs someone to be interested, after all. But Arithmancy's picked up this year as well. It's an interesting in-between - not a fan of Divination, mainly, but as Arithmancy's numbers based it makes more sense to me than staring at tea leaves and hoping they form a shape I can make sense of properly. How about you?"

He couldn't help but give a grin when she asked how often he wrote to his mother. While he didn't like to admit it, he usually wrote her at least once a day. Of course, he didn't want to over work his families owl, so he would send them in bulk. His mother enjoyed reading about all their antics. "I write her everyday, but I sent them all at the end of the week. I don't want her to miss out on anything. It's hard being away from her for a good part of the year. "
He didn't know much about cenataurs. In fact, he wasn't entirely aware that there was a job that required going around and dealing with different ones until she had told him that her father did it. He would have to do more research on the matter, perhaps it was a job a person with his condition could do. A cenataur wouldn't judge a werewolf, would they? He contemplated seeing if James and Sirius were interested in going to the forest to find a few and ask. Then again, they never really gave people a straight answer so the job was probably pretty tiresome. "Yea, my dad works in the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures. He's also an expert on non-human spirituous apparitions. But I didn't get to go to many parties after I turned five. That's when my mum got sick."
He gave a laugh as she talked about her siblings, "No, I understand. I've lived with your brother for a while now, I can't imagine doing that for my whole life. Although I hear that sister's are worse." He didn't actually know if that was true, but he had listened to Lily complain about Petunia plenty of times. While the situation between those two sister's was a bit different, he imagined that all sister's fought like the two of them did. Just perhaps about different things.
He was glad though that she seemed more comfortable talking about school. It was an easier subject for him to talk about as well, seeing as it was all he really used to focus on. At least, until he started thinking about her all the time. "I hated Divination. But I suppose this year I'm enjoying Transfiguration. Defense Against the Dark Arts has always been my favorite though, it's just the one class I'm the best at. Herbology is the worst for me, I dropped it as soon as I could."

Hearing Remus talk about his mother was extremely endearing. She couldn't recall the last time she or her brother had written home, but she was glad that he was so close with Mrs. Lupin - and couldn't help but wonder if her name would be in today's letter. Don't assume that! He has lots of things to write about, I'm sure. "I love that, what a wonderful system," Char said sincerely. "I bet she's always interested to hear what you're learning, she must've had a completely different education." She'd learned a bit about muggle education through her coursework but, as she felt with most of the discipline, she hadn't learned enough. Although their Muggle Studies department was strong, she knew, the girl often wished that more emphasis was put on this discipline, that it was required, taken more seriously. The way the world was these days, it seemed thoughtless to disregard this area - it was the best option they had to better their understandings of muggles, and with more understanding surely more would be of the opinion that they weren't all that different than themselves. They were all people, at the end of the day, for goodness sake. She nodded as Remus elaborated on his father's work, his mother's sickness. To hear that his mum had been sick for nearly his whole life put a twist in her heart - they were so close, and she'd been sick so long, he must've grown up with worrying for her, looking forward to coming to school but not able to entirely, knowing he'd be leaving her behind. "Ah, just missed each other then," she said with a smile, trying for levity. She'd have to think later on to see if she could recall such a man from her moments at the Ministry - their fathers worked on the same level, surely Char had seen him before. But she didn't want to pry more into his family situation, sensing some disconnect with the Mr. Lupin and empathizing with that. Letting out a light laugh - Cole sure was an interesting fellow to be tied to in life - the girl gave another nod, as he was surely on the right track. "Brothers, sisters - difficult in their own way," she admitted, surprised that she was actually talking about this. Usually she kept this sort of thought to herself, not wanting to stir the pot. "But we've got each other's backs at the end of the day...there's just a lot of miscommunication, at least with us."Charlotte liked hearing about his takes on classes - Transfiguration and Defense were difficult, she really had to work more on the practical aspects and was impressed to hear that Defense was his best, glad to find that he wasn't keen on divining either - but what could've caused his aversion to Herbology? "Herbology?" Char let out a chuckle, so curious as to the story behind that. She didn't hold the subject near and dear to her heart or anything, but it was harmless enough - Professor Sprout was helpful, and as long as you did your best to keep the various magical flora alive, she was usually understanding. "Whatever happened?"

While Remus had already sent his weekly batch of letters home, he was planning on writing his mother another one tonight. He hadn't yet mentioned that he had asked a girl out, which was a fact he knew his mother fretted about. She was concerned for his happiness, and while it was a fair concern given his condition, it had always bothered him. After all, she had to know what kind of life he would lead after the situation of his lycanthrophy was explained to her. Still, he wanted her to know about Charlotte. Even if it was just one date, it was the most perfect date in the entire world and he couldn't wait to see what his mother would have to say.
He gave a small smile, nodding as Charlotte talked about a muggle education. "She loves hearing about it, she often convinces my father to show her the spells and things that I write to her about. I think she's a tad jealous of both me and him, but she never shows it." He paused, taking a moment in his thoughts with a smile, "I suppose I am jealous of her though. The way muggles see the world, it's fascinating. No magic to explain everything, and so they have science. And the answers they find, they make sense if you don't know any better." He was rambling again, but he couldn't help it. His mother was important to him, in a way that was hard to fully explain. Even with such a limited knowledge of this world, she was always able to answer his questions. He loved her, and admired her.
It was nice, Remus thought, that she didn't dwell on the issue of him not being at Ministry parties, and that she didn't comment in his mother being sick. The lie was an easy one to tell, but occasionally people who start to ask questions that he didn't have answers to. And since she had so nicely avoided questioning him any further on his mother, he decided to further avoid mentioning her family since it was a sensitive topic.
He couldn't help but be embarrassed when she asked the question, as he hadn't been really been thinking he would be telling her this story. Still, she had asked. So he would oblige and tell her what made him drop the dreadful class. "Well, in fifth year we working with the Fanged Geranium's, you know? And well we weren't really paying attention of course and the damn thing bit me and it wouldn't let go. For a good long time. The guys found it hilarious, of course."

Charlotte listened intently as Remus spoke about his mother, hearing in his words how much he cared for her. It was incredibly endearing, as was hearing him speak more about muggles in general. It truly was remarkable, the ways that they'd explained things over the ages - magic, God, science - each more "rational" than the next. "It's wonderful she likes to stay so involved, actually see what you're writing about. Does her family know? About your father and yourself, I mean. Or are you said to be at a 'boarding school'?" She hoped he wouldn't take this as being invasive, as she was simply curious - how far out did the truth spread in mixed families? "Well, I suppose that's reason enough to drop it - supportive friends, they are," she teased, knowing, as the whole school did, how tight the group of four was. Teasing. How is it you're so comfortable with this boy as to joke with him? It was an odd thing, indeed, that someone could get her to lighten up so quickly, automatically, especially as she had so much to actually worry about. For whatever he'd said about managing Cole, she knew she'd have her own fallout to deal with - whether she and Remus went on one date or twenty - and that wasn't something she was exactly looking forward to. That doesn't make it unnecessary - messy, yes. Necessary, yes. You knew this would happen at some point, and he must have as well. Deep, deep down.
Out of your head, would you?
And the puncture wounds left by the testy plant - as well as the tears he must've gotten in ripping his hand from it - must be cause for some of the scarring she was noting on the hand she still held. Although, Remus had said he wasn't much involved in his father's work, so there went the theory of scarring coming from much exposure to magical creatures...But he and the guys were known adventurers, perhaps he neglected to go to the nurse after exploits with them, not wanting to get into trouble?
Speaking of not getting into trouble...
"I know that - ah - it's still a few weeks, but what do you think about Hogsmeade?" Well, that was specific. "I mean - if you want, Daisy's always trying to get me to come with her and Pete, maybe we could...all go together?" Charlotte knew her sweet friend would freak out at this, in the best way possible. She'd been trying to get her and Remus together for so long that Char really felt foolish at not realizing this was a date to begin with - had she and Peter been working at Remus the same as her? And it wouldn't be odd if the four were together, only them knowing it was a - um - double-date.
Or maybe it was a silly idea.
Yes, yes - it probably was.

Remus shifted uncomfortably in his seat as she asked about his mother's family. He hadn't ever met them, at least not that he could remember. He was sure there was a time, when he had been very young, that they had been involved. But after the attack, after his earliest memories, there was nothing. He hadn't ever received a present from any of his mother's family either. Quite frankly, he wasn't even sure if they were still alive. And he didn't ask, if she wanted to talk about them, he knew that she would. "I don't...I don't know. I've never met them, so if she tells them about me I'm sure it's something of that sort."
He gave a laugh as she teased him, glad that she seemed to be just as comfortable as he was. While he was a bit embarassed by the story - honestly, who forgets to pay attention with working with a plant that bites? - he was glad that she got some enjoyment out if it. He let the silence fall between them, rubbing his thumb across her fingers lightly. It was nice, this whole situation. Being on a date, with a girl, who found him interesting and asked him questions.
Her next question caught him off guard, however, and he stumbled over his reply, "H-Hogsmeade? With me?" Sure, there had been a mention that he should ask to her to go with him, and he knew Daisy had been pestering him to ask Charlotte out because she wanted them to go with her and Peter. But he hadn't actually considered that it would be Charlotte asking him to go. That she would want to go with him. "I would really like that. It would be fun."

She seemed to have inadvertently struck on something touchy, asking about his mother's family, as his discomfort with the topic became evident. Her brows furrowed as Remus admitted to never having met that side of the family - for as odd as hers was, and sure they were out of touch, she could still give names and a brief description of each of her extended family members. To never have met part of your family...her one question was raising more, and she did her best to squash them. The girl simply nodded, giving him a gentle smile, as she resisted pressing the issue.
Char looked down to their intertwined fingers after she asked Remus Lupin to Hogsmeade. Of her own accord. After Cole was through trying to murder Remus, he'd now be doing the same to her, surely. What were you thinking, asking him? Surely that's not something one does in the middle of a date. Is this the middle of the date? Or now that you've suggested the next is it the end of the date? Oh, don't try and distract yourself - you've said it, no going back now, just need to wait for his - "You think so? Well - great, then." She brightened considerably at his stumbling acceptance, at him thinking she was fun, and even though she was filled with new worry, she tried to push that back. This should be a happy moment to remember. Char shot him a sheepish smile as she continued. "I don't know about you, but Daisy's been begging me for years. Never wanted to be the third head on a runespoor, out with that pair, though - nothing against either of them, of course - but, well, I'm sure you know as well as I do how they are."

A girl had asked him to Hogsmeade. Not that it had never happened before. Remus had hit puberty before his friends, and for a while had his own small group of girls that had followed him around the castle. He had gotten tall, his voice had changed, and he had been thoroughly embarrassed, especially when the older girls had asked him to Hogsmeade. That was the past though, and not something he wanted to be thinking about now. This girl had asked him, a girl he liked and wanted to spend as much time with her as possible. He gave a laugh at the mention of Daisy, remembering how often she had pestered him to go with the two of them. She would bring a friend and then he wouldn't be the third wheel. He supposed that friend was probably Charlotte. "Peter and Daisy both often begged me to go with them. And I do know, while they're good together sometimes they can be..." Remus trailed off, trying to think of the proper word for the two. "Nauseatingly endearing?" He supposed that was the best way to put it. They were always together, secretly holding hands and exchanging kisses and secrets. It was adorable, but when you walked into the boys dorm while the two were in there, it was a completely different story. He wasn't sure what to do or say next, and he hadn't been keeping track of the time. But he wasn't ready for this to be over, so he needed to think of something. "So uhm...what's your, I mean," Remus was really hoping his inability to speak around her would go away. Once they got onto a topic he had no problem, but trying to come up with words when in a silence like this, while she was looking at him to intently, it was almost impossible. "Sorry, uhm. What's your favorite color?"

Charlotte felt good.
She'd just asked Remus to Hogsmeade - in a roundabout group-date sort of manner that she'd have to clear with Daisy, but she couldn't envision her dear friend saying no - successfully. Rather than being out of the woods about this whole being-with-Remus-idea, so to speak, she was...moving forward through them. Part of her was worried about that, rather more impulsively than usual trekking into uncharted territory, a territory that her brother was determined she not enter. But the rest of the girl was...excited. And she should be! This was huge - a first - she could hardly believe the words had come out of her, but they had, and he'd agreed so kindly -
Char's grin widened as he laughed, and she had to nod at his apt description of their mutual friends, letting out a laugh of her own as a thought struck her. "Exactly, couldn't say it better myself. And I'm starting to get the feeling that they've been planning for this on both ends," she said, eyes darting up to meet his dark ones. She felt a bit silly, realizing this probably rather belatedly, but it was nice to know that she wasn't the only one of the two that had been prodded in this direction. And she trusted Daisy's judgement, and if Peter had been getting on Remus' case too - well, they already had friends on their side! That gave the girl some comfort, and she was looking forward to updating the other Gryffindor on the day's event.
Remus started to say something, then stopped, and she gave him an encouraging look while she waited for him to finish. He was so sweet, honestly, wanting to know more about her - a rather foreign experience, well, since getting to know her classmates in first year. After that she'd essentially stuck with the few friends she'd made - namely, her roommates. So when he got the question out, she could only smile, giving his hand a squeeze in a way that was feeling almost too natural. "Lavender - and yours?"

He was excited to tell the boys about Hogsmeade. They would be happy for him, after they finished questioning if she had known if it was a date or not. It would have to wait, though, as he was positive that he was going to be in here with her until dinner. Just holding her hand and talking about nothing, it was absolutely perfect. He would need to figure out exactly where they should go in Hogsmeade though, he didn't fancy sitting around watching a Peter and Daisy snog session with Charlotte. He could only assume she felt the same. "Well, I can't deny that both of them have been nudging me in your direction for a while now, I guess I just never thought you would be interested," Remus answered. Perhaps he shouldn't have said that, but it wasn't false. He wasn't charming like James, or stunningly handsome like Sirius. He was more like Peter, but even Peter had more things going for him. Remus was just, well, Remus. Perfectly plain and simple. It just seemed silly that anyone would pick him over his friends. Especially someone as sweet as Charlotte, who patiently waited for him to form his words, even giving his hand a squeeze when he finally managed to ask the question. His stutter and embarrassment was far from endearing, he was sure. But she was just so pretty and sweet and he wasn't entirely sure the whole situation wasn't a dream at how well it had been going. "Blue," he replied as his eyes met hers. No, it wasn't true. His favorite color had always been yellow, but Charlotte's eyes were blue and frankly he couldn't think of a better color right now. "Favorite food?"

Charlotte’s eyes widened a bit as he spoke, not sure of what to say. It wasn’t as if she hadn’t been interested when Daisy had brought up Remus time and time again. He was, as Alex would say, a “looker,” as most girls would agree, she had to assume.
Not that that was all she -
Besides him, objectively, being handsome, Remus had a steadying presence about him that was appealing. Well, currently she was anything-but-steady around him, now that they were - ah - getting close to discussing feelings and the like. But generally he seemed to be a centering sort, but quick to smile, laugh. From conversations with Cole, she had gathered that he was the one out of the group of boys to always be on top of his work, and she was glad that he too took school seriously. And she’d definitely watched, over the years, as he tried to fit his long frame into the too-short couches in the common room to read for the evening -
You’ve been paying attention.
...just a bit.
So she shook her head, brushing back her hair with her free hand. "Not so much ‘not interested,"” she admitted, feeling her cheeks growing warm again. "Figured you’d be that way though - I love Daisy, I do, but she’s rather more optimistic than me. She is going to give me the biggest I-told-you-so," she said with a laugh, finding she didn't really mind. There were worse things to be wrong about than potentially gaining the affections of a bloke as good as the one holding her hand. Char nodded along to his color, and felt her smile grow as he continued to ask these get-to-know-you's. They were starting from Chapter One, and she appreciated the ease with which he was trying to become familiar with her. "Guilty of a sweet tooth," she said with a chuckle. "Can't cook to save my life, but I can bake. I'll usually have something about for a quick fix though, in case I've not the time, like sugar quills or chocolate." She could practically feel Alex sighing after she spoke - girls weren't supposed to admit to that, were they? So Char quickly continued, "Yourself? And what's your go-to spot in Hogsmeade?"

They had been in their fourth year when Daisy became a daily part of their life. And they had all accepted into their group over the years, each of them feeling differently about her. Remus thought she was good for Peter, kept his head above the clouds on days when sometimes Peter was feeling down. And she was fun to have around, but it'd been in their fourth year that she had started to mention Charlotte. Remus knew who she was, after all, Cole was their roommate. He'd mentioned he had had a little sister, and a couple years later, mentioned that she was off limits. So Remus had always turned Daisy down, not wanting to even test the waters of his Qudditch playing roomie. But he'd paid attention, sometimes paying enough attention to cause Daisy to hunt him down and question him repeatedly. And eventually he had given in at the end of last year, admitting that yes, he thought Charlotte was attractive. But he hadn't mentioned that he would consider dating her, no, that was a more recent development that he had even surprised himself with. Daisy had been on his case since the first day of school, constantly reminding that this was his last year and was he really not even going to try? He wondered if he should have listened to her sooner. After all, she and Charlotte were close. Maybe she had been trying to tell him something he had refused to see. He gave a smile at Charlotte's words, not really understanding why she could possibly think that he wouldn't be interested. She was beautiful, and far too good for him. She was perfect in so many ways that he wasn't. He was tall and lanky, always slouching to try and be the same height as his friends. And then there were the scars-he found one on his cheek and rubbed it absentmindedly, trying not to remember the night the ones on his face had occurred. "I suppose she will," he said with a small laugh, knowing full well that Charlotte wasn't going to be the only one getting that sort of statement from the red headed girl. But as she mentioned having a sweet tooth, his grin widened. Ah, there was something they had in common. Remus always had chocolate on him, and he had secret stashes all about the his room. He couldn't help himself, it was his favorite. "Chocolate. It's more than a sweet tooth, it's a problem really. And Honeydukes, I always make the guys stop there every time. What about you?"He paused, taking a moment to dig a bar of chocolate from his pockets and placed it on the table between them. He normally wouldn't share, but Charlotte was special, and he didn't mind sharing something as special as chocolate with her. "Favorite holiday?"

What had she done to cause that happy of a response? The boy was grinning as if she’d said or done something incredibly clever, but Char had only just been admitting to loving sweets and -
Ah.
She had a grin of her own as he said that chocolate was his problem, and gave an affirming nod at his mention of Honeydukes. It was the most delightful, if crowded, place, and she always made a stop there herself when in the wizarding village. Finding these little bits about him was good, grounding, and she was glad to find that they were having some overlaps. “Honeydukes is a must,” she agreed, “and I always make time for Poe’s as well, it’s got the most marvelous selection. Unless the girls persuade me otherwise, I’d be happy there the whole day - usually we end up at the Broomsticks or Gladrags for a time as well, though.” She had nothing against the pub, and knew that it was the preferred spot for many of her peers; but it was rather loud when the whole school body was there, the only conversations to be had were done in shouts, and she felt she rather disappeared in the crowd. The butterbeer was warming and welcome, though, during the trips in the colder months.
Remus began to shuffle about, and she wondered what was prompting it - was he readying to go? - when he pulled out a bar of chocolate, setting it neatly between them.
Well aren’t you sweet. Distracted as she was by him offering the treat, she nearly missed his question, and was a bit belated in her response. “Holiday?” Most holidays involved going home, spending “quality time” with the family...Christmas was an awkward dinner, the New Year spent with Vi and Cole one-upping each other on resolutions neither would keep... “I do enjoy Halloween,” she said with a smile, breaking off a small bit of the chocolate bar before handing it to him. “The masquerade is a bit much, but the spirit of the holiday is fun, and the decorations are always so phenomenal. What about you?”

Perhaps his life would not always be as dull as it had once been. Not only has this beautiful girl accepted his offer of a date, she had asked for a second. On top of that she had a love for sweets, something that he had every intention of encouraging. His friends would often shake theirs head at him when they caught him sneaking chocolate at odd hours throughout the day. Unless it was the week of the moon of course. That week whatever he needed to do to survive it was acceptable to them. Regardless of how strange some of his requests had been over the years. "Ah, Poe's! I love it there myself but quite often don't get to stay as long as I would like. My friends tend to do the same and drag me off to places they find far more tolerable," he said with a small chuckle. No, there was no keeping James or Sirius holed up in a bookstore during a Hogsmeade visit. "Not that I have any dislike of the Three Broomsticks, it's a fine place. Just a little too crowded for me."He smiled happily as she accepted his offer of chocolate, breaking off a small piece to munch on as he listened to her answer the question. He supposed it hadn't been the best question to ask, but he did find her response interesting. He had never been fond of Halloween. Mostly because of the wolf. It was a day where his condition was considered a joke amongst muggles and wizards. He gave her a smile, swallowing his treat as he pondered his favorite holiday. "Well, Halloween is nice but I think I quite prefer Easter. I know it's a rather pointless holiday, but my mum always makes sure to send an extra amount of sweets." Of course, it was rather superficial that he would pick Easter given his love for candy, but Christmas was only so much fun when you knew that your Christmas night was going to be spent as a wolf this year.
