WIZARDING APPLICATION
I hate it here, so I will go to secret gardens in my mind...
And in my fantasies, I rise above it
And way up there, I actually love it...
VITAL INFO
Character Name: Selene Hwan Faolan
Date of birth: 3 July 1959
Age: 19

Mother: Ho-Sook Kwon (werewolf, presumed deceased)
Siblings: 18-year-old brother Tharon and four half-siblings: Elara Faolan (26) and two brothers aged 23, 22, a 14-year-old sister
Bloodline: pureblood / werewolf
Back Story
Home. An elusive concept, and one Selene has grasped for since her earliest remembered years.
The forest village where her father, siblings, and the rest of their pack lived. The school that accepted her as a student, but not an apprentice. The closet of an apartment she shared with a few girls from Pandemonium, and disappeared from monthly, as the moon called. The sprawling houses of wealthy strangers, through nights she imagined all that she saw and felt could belong to her...
Like she does for many things, Selene blames her father for home always being out of reach. They are marked in their own way, she and her siblings, she is sure of it. His pattern of disappearing mates, negligence of the children who remained - surely their bad luck was cosmic comeuppance for his failings.
After the mysterious death of Bianca Zimmer, Ulric wasted little time finding a new partner from within the pack. Young, spirited, and equal to him in fervor for their way of life, Ho-Sook had known little of life outside of the pack. The wolf who turned her as a youth and took her in loved to dole out stories to Selene and Tharon in their younger years; as small as she was, she was fast, and never backed down from a race, even from those twice her size; she loved to swim and dive through the lakes that were her namesake, taking pride in fishing and digging roots, providing for her new kin; she quickly learned to obey, and stop asking for her mother and father; before long, it was as if they and her past life were only a dream, left behind and forgotten in favor of the power that was now her own.
Even with two small children toddling around, and the older three all turned and running wild, Ulric and Ho-Sook continued their duties with the leader of the pack. Monthly raids through farming villages were common, as were close calls with the Werewolf Capture Unit. Almost all adults in the pack had a story or two about a wizard coming close, or getting caught only to escape, or luring them in to show them just why their kind should be left alone. But until Ulric returned home without their mother, Selene thought they were just tall tales meant to scare them into staying inside the boundary. As time went on and their mother failed to return, their father putting a stop to all talk of her, Selene's own memories of her became a dream, the stories told in secret more real than what little she could recall.
As custom dictated, and as Ulric would have demanded regardless - Selene was bitten upon her fifth birthday. The following year, on the eve of Tharon's birthday, she waited until the house was quiet to pull him from the cot they shared. They only made it a few steps outside before they were caught by their father, and none of her shrill protestations or weeping pleas or bites or scratches made a difference, only bringing her punishment. She couldn't save the little one from the curse or the pain, just as she couldn't save herself. She withdrew inwards, taking fewer risks, until she was old enough to join her half-siblings at Durmstrang.
Away from the pack and out from under her father's thumb, while worries for Tharon and their new young sister abounded, Selene found a love of learning and magic that surprised and emboldened her again. Skills and intelligence praised and practiced in the woods helped in school, to be sure - few dared to cross the Faolan siblings, and their instincts served them well in dueling - but there was more to learn than there was time to dedicate to study. She often elected to stay at Durmstrang over the holidays, being far from their father's favorite and not one to be missed in the forest anyway. But she and her siblings, and the other wolves in the school, did not fully belong. Sideways glances and snide comments led to quick duels and faster hand-to-hand brawls. Selene was not eager to befriend the witches or wizards around them, but a small number persisted; despite her jealousy towards them and their wide open futures, those who wormed their way in were stuck, unless she was proven wrong.
No matter how high her marks and how splendid her performances, as Selene neared graduation and applied for apprenticeships in her top courses, she was left pounding on doors after receiving cursory rejections from the professors. But the risk was simply too high to employ someone like her in an official capacity. No matter that she was head-and-shoulders above her competition. They wished her well in her future endeavors. Knowing that they had led her on and doomed her all the while.
Forced to return to her home country and unable to apply to local advanced academies - her record from Durmstrang was spotless, compared to many of her fellows, but she could not risk the headmaster or any of her professors letting her condition slip - Selene has been knocked down, and drifted. What was the use of her education, all of the time and funds and energy, if who she was - because of her father's decision - would bar her from using it?
She has found a number of jobs that will work with her schedule, the longest running one being the Pandemonium club. She prefers to see her siblings in London, but returns to the pack at least once a month; to report what intel she can to their pack leader, and to run with them through the full moon. If she could will it, the lot of them would live together in the city, in a house so big they could have their pick of rooms, even if they all wound up in the same one anyway. That dream is a long way off, especially as her income disappears to rent, food...and little luxuries that add up unfairly quickly. She has her eyes out for someone who can help provide for her family, and hates the Ministry as deeply in their bones as she does. The right side will win this war among the wizards, Selene is certain of it, for it's the only way that she and her family have a chance at a full life outside of the pack. Their time is coming.
