THE RANKS
The Dark Lord
He's the Leader of the Pack. He oversees all operations, though his main concern is wiping away the muggles and their offspring. Once the prophesy comes into play, his main concern shifts slightly. He is, however, always in charge of maintaining the safety of his horcruxes.

The Trusted
His right hand men or women, the people he trusts the most at that current point in time to carry out everything he asks of them.
The Trusted can cross over into the categories below as well.

The Untrusted
Voldemort keeps these people close to his side for an entirely different reason; he wants to keep an eye on them. Whether they have yet to prove themselves or he once trusted them in the past or if they have been helpful to him, but he has not deemed them worthy to join his inner circle.

The Soldiers
These people are on the front lines of battle. They go where they're told to go and do what they're told to do. They are known within the Death Eaters for their ability to kill and extract information, usually through torture. They're the ones called upon to raid homes and bring in the survivors, if there are any. Oftentimes, Voldemort's closest circles will include many Soliders. The members of this group travel often.

The Snatchers
These are the Death Eaters with the sole purpose of bringing in fugitives.
They have a low clearance to any information but travel just as much as the Soliders do.

The Recruiters
These Death Eaters have a way with words, and they see this cult as a purely political move. They don't use a lot of force, instead choosing to 'draft' in members of their ranks with subtle threats and suggestions about the war that is about to come down upon their heads.
They’re surprisingly gentle with other Purebloods, even those that resist at first - because they understand the importance of preserving clean blood.

The Sympathizers
These characters are not always genuine sympathizers, but sometimes just characters that are married into a Death Eater family without truly being within the ranks. This would include women & children especially.
This category is filled often with politically active Purebloods, often from old-money style family lines.

THE IDEALS
While some death eaters truly LOVE to cause pain & anguish for the fun of it, even some of the most ruthless of the ranks are still causing all of that fun & gory torture because of the big ulterior motive - The Greater Good. The Greater Good usually needs to be referred to as such to remind people that yeah, it’s horrible, but maybe things won’t suck so much down the road if we keep doing this! There aren’t a lot of Death Eaters that wake up in the morning & go, "Ha ha, YES. TIME TO BE EVIL." In fact, most of them are truly under the impression that what they’re doing will make the world a better place, eventually. Death Eaters believe in worldwide purity - making the muggle world bow down & then shrivel up & die out for what they’ve done to the wizarding world. Years of living in fear of being discovered, being tortured, years of those who practiced magic burning at the stake. (Though, they did a pretty shitty job of burning witches - if you’ve ever read any Chocolate Frog cards, you know the story.)
SOCIAL LIFE
Like most people - Death Eater life comes up at a social gathering & oftentimes one or two people will shush everyone else. “Don’t discuss politics at a party.” Would be the idea. Especially for death eater sympathizers, the idea of Voldemort’s cult is just one of political standing. Aggressive political standing, sure, but a view nonetheless. That being said, however, there is a solid misconception that all Death Eaters are wealthy Purebloods. There are many death eaters that joined young & dropped out of school, running away from home & becoming, technically, homeless youth. If they’re known to be death eaters, they have literally no where to go. No jobs, no money, etc. Their work as a death eater is all they have going for them.
THE PAY
Zip.Zero.Nada. This is not an actual career. This is a political & sociological cult. That being said, there are varying levels of wealth & poverty within the ranks of the Death Eaters. Some Death Eaters come from a lot of money, some live day-to-day lives with regular paying jobs (often even within the Ministry), and some are basically homeless, stealing possessions from raided homes and squatting in death eater camps set up in the homes & yards of other Death Eaters. There are also some incentives - Death Eaters may be rewarded for particularly good work or have damaged possessions fixed or replaced within their rank or from the Dark Lord himself, if deemed worthy.
ON THE RUN
Not all Death Eaters are. In fact, many are stationed in the schools at times, in the Ministry, at regular day jobs, and just living their lives out in the open. It’s up to you to decide whether your character is a high enough rank to be protected from public knowledge, whether they’re notorious enough to be publicly searched for, or whether no one knows them at all.
