Back Story
For the oldest child of a pair of professors - celebrated doctorates in their fields, meaningful volunteer projects and patents to their names - many would think that Doc Dearborn was failing to meet his full potential.
These unnamed many would be right.
Doc - as he nicknamed himself early on - was the kid in elementary who wouldn't sit still, who was always quick with a joke, couldn't keep his mouth shut. The foundations for homework habits were laid there and have not improved; he'll do just enough to pass, but has never been one to pull an all nighter to finish an assignment or study. He's stayed up the whole night before, of course - doing things that are much more entertaining and worthwhile.
But we were talking about elementary -
He just didn't fit at school. Made many friends, annoyed the teachers with his way to meander out of most trouble and scrape by with barely passing marks - "If he were unintelligent we'd have less of a problem here - he is choosing this, I tell you!" - while his parents tried to get him involved in something that would motivate him to keep his grades up. They have high expectations for him still, but back in the day tried club sports or trips as incentives. Doc is too easy to please for his own good, though, and his frustrated parental units were debating what to do for secondary school when his letter to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry came via the headmaster's arrival to their home.
Determining that this must be why he failed to succeed - "He wasn't meant to do well here, it's not in his nature!" - the Dearborns sent their son to the, as they found out from the kindly old man, prestigious magical school. And yes - magic was not only in storybooks. Updates they got from their son, as they read between the rambling lines, were upbeat - he was loving being there, the classes were grand, everyone was so interesting and he was making such great friends. So they figured that his grades would reflect his newfound love of school, as any reasonable pair would.
[They were disappointed.]
[Still are, actually.]
[Rather nice to be out of earshot for the majority of the year.]
[No one ruin this last year by helping them with Howlers, please and thanks.]
Thankfully, his many assurances that he will find his way in the world post-graduation have keptmany most some a bit of their fears that he will only get his Master's degree at bay. Beyond their worries about his sorely undetermined future, their relationship is a happy one. But as they usually can't get beyond the worries, the happy times are a bit few and far between.
Thankfully, Hogwarts is a different world.
The professors Nobody really cares if he's not "reaching his potential" here, as long as they know he's happy. Which he is, obviously - grand place to be, full of fun people he's grown to love. Easy-going guy like Doc has made friends without much effort, as he's never really tried in this department or most. Loves the ones he has and will always usually be there when they need him, but honestly - doesn't really know why they do need him. He's good at - he supposes - mellowing them out and making them forget about their troubles but that could just be the sacred herb as he distracts them. And it's fine - he has a laugh, he flirts shamelessly, speaks candidly, and thinks about the big picture. This is what his parents don't understand. That his definition of this is so different than theirs.
We're all just pawns in this chess game of life, aren't we? Under the controls of the kings and queens of our little worlds, we're the first to the front lines, the first to make the true sacrifices - our own happiness is nothing to those who feel they sit above us. But no one should be a pawn in their own life. In the grand scheme of the world - yes, of course, all little insignificant pieces of the game - but if you don't call the shots for yourself?
Whose life are you living?
In Doc's life - the goal is happiness. He's made happy by simple things - downtime with friends; seeing his little sister walking around the castle with her head held high; sitting out by the lake, watching the clouds, feeling the earth under him; making conversation with a beautiful girl - and truly wants nothing more. So having a plan for his future that he can't stray from, as would happen if he let his parents in? Not going to happen. He will go where he will go, do what he will do, as long as he's happy. Mistakes will be made, there's no doubt about that - but he's more than willing to make them and learn, rather than never have lived.
