Backstory: James was born to his parents later in their lives than most; his father Charlus had already established himself within the Department of Magical Law Enforcement as a member of the Improper Use of Magic Office, and during James’ years at Hogwarts has served as a member of the Wizengamot. James expressed much curiosity about his father’s work while he grew up, which was quite genuine; within his father’s lectures, and many convincing hypotheticals the child threw at him, James learned the ins and outs of wizarding law better than most children. He was privately interested in these conversations to wiggle out the loopholes of the law, and is convinced he knows enough of these to get by with a fair bit of mischief. Dorea, his mother, works within the Department of Magical Law Enforcement, and, like her husband, has had a great influence on James. She is his most trusted advisor, and he is not ashamed of expressing his fondness towards her as other boys his age may be. Both of his parents are from long established wizarding lines, and so James grew up in a wealthy estate completely within the wizarding community. Luckily, Dorea and Charlus don’t hold blood purity as a determination of someone’s worth, and this open-mindedness has rubbed off on their son, as well as their other positive values.

As an only child of older parents, James was quite spoiled growing up. He had everything he needed and more, and his charm and capabilities earned him much praise at home. He sees himself as quite invincible, and as such was willing while at Hogwarts to take risks that would scare off the average student (such as becoming an unregistered Animagus and roaming the Forbidden Forest at the full moon with his werewolf best friend). It took most of James’ time at Hogwarts to grow out of his childish superiority complex, and he still slips back into it from time to time, even after maturing over the last few years.

The friends that James made during his first year were extremely influential in bringing about this change in him: Sirius, Remus, and Peter. Something drew the four of them together, and they’ve gone through many trying situations that only brought them closer. Together they have become Animagi, created the Marauder’s Map, and Sirius has even been living at the Potter house since the end of their fifth year. James wasn’t as daring as Sirius, who tried so hard to separate himself from his family. He wasn’t as reliable as Peter, who even after six years still seemed surprised to belong to the group. He wasn’t as logical as Remus, who had saved their skins countless times with his forward thinking. But still the others turned to him for leadership. What it was that drew the others to look to him wasn’t obvious to James, who simply took it as a given; perhaps it was his considerable confidence or popularity outside of the group, but whatever it was had worked, and fed his ego. Luckily this was counteracted by the fact that these boys - and that Lily Evans - were the only students who could knock James’ ego down a few pegs when he got out of hand.

During his first few years at Hogwarts, James tested the loopholes he had found in the system, and made himself a mixed reputation by hexing students just because he could while also being the darling of professors. He made strong rivalries with Slytherins of the pureblooded and proud variety, but none more so than with Severus Snape. This stemmed from the Slytherin’s inexplainable friendship with Evans, who was undeniably attractive to James on many levels, but perhaps most so because of how well she hid her love and admiration of him. Her words had started to get to him by their seventh year, however, and he made more of an effort to grow up; he earned Head Boy status, and with Evans as Head Girl, well, he figured it was only a matter of time until she finally agreed to go out with him, which would make the headache of the new title worthwhile. He did wind up winning her affection that year, and is now on top of the world - graduated, in love and loved by the girl of his dreams, and off to start fighting for the Order to bring about change in their troubled world.

Underneath the bluster, James Potter truly is a good person. Nothing is more important to him than his friends and family, for whom he would truly risk anything for, as he is incredibly trusting of those who have earned his trust. He has strong leadership skills and natural charisma, cleverness, and confidence, mixed with a boyish exuberance for life. Unfortunately he is entirely aware of his talents (and good looks), and can tend towards being arrogant. Having accomplishments like Head Boy come to him without much effort have fed his considerable ego, and while he is trying to tame that side of him, he still slips up and reveals the immaturity that’s still there. He loves to have a good time, and enjoys nothing more than scheming with the other Marauders and implementing their (often daft) plans.
