Back Story
For as long as she can remember, Lydia has known what was expected of her.
Duty, obedience - you're a pretty enough thing to look at, but no need to share opinions, dear, leave that to the men.
Her much older brother domineered her childhood years anyway, what with his scholarly accomplishments and early entry into the organization their father was a part of (or, how he said it, integral to the operation of). And so the girl learned to absorb information, to bite her tongue, to only be seen. Early on in her youth, arrangements were made for her to marry in to the Selwyn family to strengthen both houses. The young boy she met - who although being introduced as Charles insisted on Charlie back then - was boastful even in his youth, spewing off facts about his family (and dragons, what little boy in their world didn't like dragons?), and Lydia played along. Over the following years and into their shared time at Hogwarts, she learned as much as she could about the boy she was fated to wed. Beyond what interested him were more important matters, such as what occurrences or topics led to his outbursts. Sometimes they were predictable (like any proud Ravenclaw, he despised being bested in anything academic; like any pureblood of their ilk, he hated news of "muggle-born pride" and the like), and sometimes they weren't.
But, as with anything, the young girl learned.
When to stay away (and how far), how to calm him, how to help him move forward...
It was a love they would not have found if theirs had not been a planned future, but it was the love she had.
Charlie - Charles, now, in company - was a constant at Hogwarts, despite their House separation. Theirs was friend group of like-minded individuals, and while Lydia mainly listened, she also kept the peace. When you aren't prone to speeches, others are more keen to listen when you do decide it's worth your time and energy, after all. This was useful in her dormitory, where strong personalities often conflicted, and as the years went on she became closest with Meredith out of those girls. She did like to be needed, after all. The blonde had been nothing but pleasant to her, and when she decided to be more social, Lydia was pleased to be the one to guide her back into what life was like with companions.
As her years at Hogwarts drew to a close, Lydia found herself with an abundance of options. She had spent her time at the school wisely, doing well enough in her coursework to be proud of her academic achievements. But this meant that she had to be thoughtful in what she chose to pursue, as she did not want to simply sit around her family estate waiting for her wedding. She was too intelligent to waste her own time like that.
And so, after catching up with her brother over the winter holiday of her seventh year, Lydia Avery hatched a plan. It took some doing to convince her family - and Charlie - that it would be to everyone's benefit for her to not just sit idly by...but she was pleased with the result after she'd spoken with each one-on-one, the surprise in her father's eye, the slow grin on her brother's face, the approval in her fiancé's embrace. As well as the shock of her mother, who still argues it's not her place, it's too dangerous...
But it was a perfectly plausible plan, and after arrangements were made to postpone the wedding by a year or two, she began enacting it. It was a plan which would allow her to help the cause the men in her family had dedicated their lives to, but also one that should keep her out of suspicion. It was with no shortage of glee that she returned to school. The Slytherin turned her full academic attention - a remarkable thing - to the five subjects required for entry into the prestigious Healing program at St. Mungo's Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries. Since her graduation and subsequent entry to the program (After a ridiculous interview, by the by - oh how she had had to put her "superior" in his place! How dare he assume that because of her surname and Hogwarts House that she would be anything less than exemplary at the hands-on work!), Lydia has been learning, and learning quickly. Her goal is to rise through the levels of the hospital to the Spell Damage floor - the poor souls who wind up there after these battles dearly need her skilled assistance! And if any of them happen to be the fools insisting on betraying the natural order of wizarding kind and muggles, the fools fighting against her family...
Well.
No one has a flawless healing record.
