Back Story

Our story commences in a ground-level London apartment, narrow and drafty. Polaroid pictures pinned on the colorful walls mainly show two sisters with a smattering of family and friends, amid more dramatic shots of the city. While cramped, the living space is homey with eclectic furnishings. Continue not into the sister's but into our protagonist's bedroom, and you see novels like Sherlock Holmes, where mysteries abound and are just itching to be solved, sit dog-eared and spine-cracked on shelves, while the leaves of potted and hanging plants droop, their frailty and falling bits telling of their caretaker's forgetfulness. Band posters in varying degrees of quality, from the shining Beatles one with just the slightest curve in it to the rumpled copy-paper-printed with the time changed in marker (courtesy of our protagonist's hand), join images of loved ones on the walls. Tacked up on corkboard are clippings of oddities she has found over the years to give evidence to the most wondrous of theories the public generally accepts to see, but are second to the thick crayon drawings showing a yellow-haired "Auntie Kyra" with an assemblage of children. A guitar sits forlorn in its stand next to a record player and - telling of her priorities of organization over the plants - alphabetized collection of records.

Our protagonist prefers to live here - now, in the present. Unfortunately for her, that means she's at work - the agency got her a receptionist job, again - but it gives us leave to snoop into her past unbeknownst to her.

The second child of four, the second and final girl, Kyra has lived here with her sister since deciding dorm-life wasn't her cup of tea. While they went to the same university, her best friend moved in with her now-husband once leaving home, and Kyra found she did not take to dorm-life without her best friend very well. The two had grown up together with the rest of the children on their suburban street, becoming confidants early on. Even though the paths they took diverged many times, either space- or relationship-wise, and they had wholly become their own people, they had the sort of friendship-from-childhood that could not and would not easily break.

Phoebe's busy life with Edgar gave room for her to find more to fill her own, and during university Kyra joined up with a group of fantastic ladies to form Your Favorite Band. Recognizing in herself an untalented lyricist, she has happily allowed that role to be filled by the others, while her talents lie more in the realms of music-making. They still perform, although their regularity during (and around their) university has dwindled to only semi-regularity wherever they can get as some of the members got "real" jobs and started families.

Speaking of starting families, as "serious" has not yet been a word she has used to describe a relationship, that life feels a long way down the line to our protagonist. She is content to be dubbed an aunt, and content to enjoy her youth as the days and people enter it at the right times. Days fill with work, playing alone in the nearby park, taking over a dreadfully slow computer or the newspaper archives in the public library for personal research (unless she's in the mood for "trashy" tabloids, which can hold amazing information), arguing over cooking or eating out with her sister, and occasionally getting together with a brother or two for a drink. Nights can find her reading at home or belting karaoke a bar, depending on her mood, and while she wishes her Phoebe still lived in the city - as she always had, she is making the most of what she has.

Oh! I think I hear her at the door - quick, out you get, and do watch your step! She's suspicious enough as it is, and she's nearly out of sage.

Style/Other characteristics: Kyra has accumulated a wardrobe of professional-enough attire for temp work, but once 5 pm strikes, it's into casual street clothes for her. Her hair usually goes through a few styles in a day (pins get annoying after a few hours, eh?), winding up mussed. Besides the accumulation of said wardrobe, she's accumulated a handful of tattoos over the years, mostly on the fly.

Quirks, Habits, & Oddities: Kyra is a believer, and couldn't care less whether or not others are. She knows there's more to the world than what the public is told, and will happily spend her time researching. Co-workers get annoyed quickly with all of the pen-drumming, humming, and singing under her breath that happens, but she can't help that the music is on in there! She's also pretty touchy-feely, so it's best to just get accustomed to that. Her standing weekly visit to the fortune-teller down the street is also something to schedule around.
Hobbies & Enjoyments: If there was such a thing as a professional karaoke singer, Kyra feels she'd be game for the gig. Alas, until then, she'll sing and drum for The Band, and on off nights grace the karaoke bars with her inebriated presence. Going on tours around haunted places are also worth whatever travel is entailed, especially when she can convince a friend or two to join her. She also loves playing Aunt for Phoebe and Ed's kids whenever she can hike out to their place, although she still thinks it's mad that there are three now. Keep it in your pants, Ed. She has some names to insist for the eventual baby #4 that should hopefully keep that man in line. Along those lines, sneaking her best friend down to London is always a good time.
