VITAL INFO

Age: 18
Father: Randolph Vanderhyde (Slytherin)
Mother: Anthea Joan Vanderhyde (Ravenclaw)
Siblings: Natalie, 6th year Slytherin
Bloodline: pure, naturally
Back Story: Let us begin with that ridiculous middle name.
Anthea, daughter of two cousins - which wasn't unusual for the time, granted, but hadn't done her any favors - has always fancied herself as being attuned to the art of Seeing. While her parents thought she was daydreaming as a child, creating stories as she lay on her back in the yard, she was not staring blankly into the night sky as it appeared, but amusing herself, losing herself, in visions of potentials of the future. When, excitedly, she claimed that the stars spoke to her, this was written off as childhood fantasy by parents too busy to be bothered by the oddities of a child. At Hogwarts she was recognized for her potential, and spent the majority of her spare time with the Divination professor and in exploring varying methods of the art. Anthea was thought of as rather peculiar, by her fascination, by her dedication, by her mix of bluntness and whimsy. It was in her sixth year that she had a vision, by haematomancy, of the war to come. She saw a boy with her hooded eyes in a cloud of fog, battle-bruised and tense, his wand at the ready as he turned to face the onslaught.
This was her son. Some part of her knew it was mad to know this, but she felt a kinship with this boy, older than her in the vision, and simply knew.
So when she and Randolph, a few short years later, had their son - she gave him power in his name, through Ethan - strong, firm, safe - and, less subtly, Mars - the god of war. Because if this beautiful little boy would grow up to be the young man she had seen, Anthea wanted him to have every advantage, so he would come home to her at the end. Never shy about her gifts, the young mother doted on her son, telling him of the great man he would become.
While his wife's incredibly rich head is in the clouds - or stars or sticks or runes or whatever other trick from her extensive stash - Randolph's feet remain solidly on the ground. Theirs is not a marriage of love, but was arranged, and has an unspoken agreement that the more independent they are, the better their lives will be. He has worked in the Ministry since graduating, and has held a high-paced job of stocks in the International Magical Trading Standards Body. Money, he would tell his son, tired but exhilarated after work, is the surest way to power. Having married up in that respect, the man surely knew what he was talking about. He passed stories from his youth down to his son - of growing up without an inheritance, but only an appearance of wealth. How that appearance had cost him at first - spending precious funds on tailoring suits instead of meals - but had gained him a wealthy wife, a prominent station, and security. The boy absorbed this, seeing his father as important, powerful - much more so than his silly mother, whose real value had come, besides her wealth, in that one true divination.
The boy grew up in the mansion with his father gone long days, his mother
And who had wealth?
People like him.
People like him were from long wizarding lines.
They had history.
They were special.
Not as
And so when it came time for Hogwarts and he was sorted into his father's House, Ethan made associations purely with the pure, as they could be counted on as people of value. Ethan has never been one for…friends. True, he is closer with some people than others, but these are people he distrusts less than the rest, and it’s not like even they truly know him. Like most in his House and going on to greater things, as he knew from the start, Ethan is a calculating, secretive being. If he was not, how could he ever hope to be trusted in assisting to create the new, right, world order? Friendships have neither been his desire nor his forte - but the gentlemanly manners and way of speech he developed through life in pureblooded society do well enough to get him trust when he needs it.
The ladies he’s been with do best in neglecting to detect his thinly-veiled distaste for them - as officially he only dates those he is set up by his family or associates. He likes to think he has perfected the charm required to keep up a facade, to placate his father's desire for him to marry well. This usually remains until Ethan has tired of what the girl has to offer, after which he will heartbrokenly write Vanderhyde senior about their terrible break-up. While the heartbreaks were never real, at least not for him, the repeated failures began to color his self-image, and stress became his most faithful friend. Changing his ways was something he had not the role models to mimic, but something he did try when, at the end of his Hogwarts years, a secretive match was made with Meredith Mulciber.
During his Hogwarts years, surrounded by purebloods as ambitious and deceitful and manipulative as himself, Ethan first saw, with his own eyes, the mudbloods. He had been told of them as a child, of course - unnatural things - but hadn't seen one, been forced into classes with one, until that first year. They had no legacy. They had no inheritance. They had no magical worth. They were asking for all that he and the others gave them, for daring to disrupt the natural order.
Then came the rumors. Of the wizard bringing about change.
There will be war, mundane students whispered over their Prophet's.
There will be war, his likeminded housemates said smugly in the common room.
His graduated associations began to write about the grand opportunities they had been given, and Ethan knew his time was coming. As he neared the completion of his education, Ethan was assessed, Marked, and given his instructions. His skills would be most useful in undercover work, he was told, and so he would be joining the Ministry task force after completing his seventh year. As this was what was expected of him anyway, due to his father's longevity at the place, Ethan, ever confident, knew he would be up to the task.
When Natalie joined him at Hogwarts, their relationship became rocky for the first time. When they were at home she had seemed content to do as told, but the girl hit an insolent streak, dating halfbloods and worse simply to get his ire up. He'd taught her playthings lessons, never harming a hair on her pretty head, but didn't hide his frustration with her during these times. He hopes that the girl graduates in a few years with some sense, after all his lectures, and has the strength of mind to join him among the ranks. That would be far preferable to her following the path of their mother - willingly, or forcibly - or setting off on her own.
APPEARANCE

Style/Other characteristics: Ethan has never not looked put-together. From his purposefully styled hair and clean-shaven face to his polished shoes, Ethan is the picture of a young gentleman. When in school his uniforms were kept pristine, as he had learned from a young age that sometimes all it takes is appearance to get you what you need. Outside of school, tailored dark suits with crisp dress shirts, sharp ties, shined shoes are a standby, as are the wizarding equivalents; he has not and does not care to grasp the concept of casual dress. Additionally, Ethan generally keeps some sort of neutral face, putting on controlled expressions when necessary in polite company, but when infused with emotion - usually, aggravation -
- his face will tick, briefly, out of composure. His usual, excluding when in the most trusted company, need to keep his thoughts to himself keeps his reactions to grievances that aren't entirely consumable nearly hidden; however, he can abruptly turn volatile if pushed, the facade torn off. Also, of course, the Dark Mark is tattooed on his left forearm, easily hidden under the latest styles.
