If asked, James Potter would admit that it was rather nice to be the one chased by this girl, for a change. Especially as she breathlessly shouted his name - that was something he wouldn't be letting himself forget - as they approached Vindictus, and the bookshelf underneath him, at full speed. So it was with more showmanship than necessary, really, that he drew his wand and flung the bookcase aside, seeing as he had her full attention at the moment. Not something to waste. "Scared, Evans?" he teased over a shoulder, grinning as he burst onto the secret stairs. If he was hearing right, Lily slowed to a momentary stop before joining him. Did she really think he'd lead her anywhere unsafe? Hurtful. But it was only a few moments before he could hear her again, determination in every pounding step...
Once they were on the even stone again, just meters away from The Fat Lady, James vacillated. How much of a "toe-rag" move would it be to keep going at full tilt? Could it even be an arrogant move, beating her at this when it was her challenge in the first place? While their friendship was stronger than it had ever been - seeing as he could actually call her a friend these days - James didn't want her opinion lessening of him because of any minute slip-up he made. You can't always be watching over your shoulder, thinking she's judging you... The decision was made for him, though, as James became unbalanced, the Head Girl having launched herself at him with enough force to take them both down.
He laughed as the redhead climbed off of him, but was on his feet and returning the favor within seconds. James looped his arms around her waist, spinning her away from the portrait hole, and while he hadn't meant to take her feet out from under her...bit easier for me to throw you about than the other way around. One hand on the portrait's frame, one extended to the girl, James couldn't keep a rather smug grin off of his face, especially as her glare faded almost instantly.
James grinned even more broadly at Lily's words reached out to brush dust off of the arm of her sweater, knowing his had to look a disheveled mess as well. "What d'you think I've been doing here this whole time?" he said with a laugh. "Can't drop me in a magical castle and expect me to stay on the obvious path! I'll show you some more, if you want." While James knew that they really should head inside to grab what they needed for Astronomy, and while he knew he was stalling...he didn't want this to stop, which he felt it would as soon as others were around. His heart was coming back down to normal, but the rush of adrenaline from this mad sprint with her was still more than pleasantly coursing through him. It could always be like this, Lily...
