▶︎ It only happens once a year It only happens once a lifetime Make the most of it Rabnott Farm, Scotland "Oi, Isla! Wait up," Mal hailed his cousin, rising from the crowd shoulder-to-shoulder around the kitchen table. He and Izzy had just finished judging the annual, and very serious, Christmas Eve Day gingerbread house competition. Archie had taken it this year, good lad - two stories, candy cane arches, the works, a piece of art in biscuit form - and while the parade of family members would hopefully all have a chance to see the creations, Mal knew they weren't long for this world. The stories were grander than the creations, anyway, and they would surely be regaled with them soon enough. Archie's would grow to ten towering stories, Fiona's to include an entire gumdrop forest, Ross's with a gingerbread centaur horde - and he was excited to play along. But he hadn't had a chance to bend his eldest cousin's ear yet - unsurprising, no one was guaranteed a moment's peace during the holiday - and hoped he still could. Just for a little while. He wanted to hear more about her life in London, at Mungo's, fill her in on the interview - but most pressingly, Merlin, he needed someone to talk to. Izzy was too close to the situation, having been just a year below Helena and in the same House. She'd give him a hard time later, no doubt, about not going to her first - but he could take it. "You lot," Mal cautioned, Fi giving a grand roll of the eyes as she cracked off a turret, "don't eat yourself sick, alright? Save some room, dinner's in the oven."With a clap to his classmate's shoulder, Malcolm hurried off after Isla. He hadn't known her to date all that often - not that he'd done much prying, she was a bit his senior, off into the world for some time now, and entitled to her privacy - but he felt he knew her well enough to know that when she fell, she fell, just like he did. While Helena's visit was just days away, he hadn't spoken about it all that much - he'd given his family a head's up that a girl was coming by, and the resulting chorus of questions and oooohs was enough to clam him up - and hoped she'd have better advice than Archie, who was a few weeks into his first relationship himself. He wished Mick still lived nearby, he would've hopped the fence to see her, wanting more to talk with someone than have a go at explaining his feelings over owls. Isla could help settle his nerves, though. He dearly hoped. "Fancy a walk before dinner? Wine's mulled on the fire, can take some with to keep warm?" he asked as he caught up with her, nervous smile ear-to-ear. The only chance of actually having a conversation would be to head out, he figured, and hoped she'd be up for it. It wasn't all that cold, as long as you dressed right... "Just enough light left to see the treeline, I expect, might catch a deer or a fox peeking out if we're lucky."

“Oh for Merlin…just five minutes…” She muttered under her breath as she came to a screeching halt in her mad dash to escape out the back door. Isla absolutely adored her family, and it was too rare she got to even sit at the same table with her favorite sister. However, she needed a ciggy and some quiet, just for a few, she would pop out and back in before anyone even noticed her absence. Everyone was so busy with the competition, and really they had all outdone themselves this year. She never remembered her gingerbread houses coming out so fantastically when she was still a competitor. So, with the winner making a victory lap and with there being so many of them, it should have been easy to escape. Alas, someone was calling her name! She turned to find Malcolm weaving his way over. Alright, of the people assembled, her kid cousin wasn’t the worst option to be stalled by. Not by half. And when he caught up to her Isla gave him a relieved smile. “Excellent timing!” She told him in an excited whisper, giving him a clap on his shoulder and hurrying him along. “I was just popping out for a bit. Go, go, grab the wine before we’re caught. On second thought, leave it. It’s not worth it.” At the last moment she grabbed his arm to drag him to the door. They could drink wine by the fire after she had her smoke break and found out why Malcolm wanted to go for a little stroll in the cold with boring old cousin Isla. Her interest was peeking by the second and she eyed Mal as she slipped her arms into her coat, trying to recall everything she knew about him. It was disappointing to discover she didn’t know much, not enough, not nearly enough for them being family. Age, house, career ambition. Those were such basic things. When had she fallen so out of touch with people she loved so much? She promised to do better in the future as she shoved a hat on her head and dashed out the door. “Oh sweet Merlin! It’s c-c-cold. Should have b-b-brought the w–w-wine.” Isla laughed around shivers, taking her cigarettes from her pocket and heading toward the tree line like Malcolm suggested. Drawing her wand she lit the length of tobacco, taking a satisfying drag, before using it to cast toasty warming charms over herself and her cousin. “That’s a little better.” She said after a moment and a few more deep inhales. “So, go on, spill. And don't tell me you're out here with me to look for foxes. ”

His cousin's excited whisper got him grinning, and Mal almost tripped over his feet as she pulled him along, stifling a laugh as plans went as quickly as they came. Isla was right, though - there was a good chance for a warm drink by the fire to still be an option in a little while, much better of a chance than it was for them to catch another brief respite before dinner. Mal loved the full house with loved ones around every corner, but was glad she too was in need of a minute. He kept an eye out as they piled layers on by the door, watchful for anyone who'd stall their progress while trying to find his things in the mess. Just as he'd hopped into his own boots but given up and pulled his dad's jacket over his sweater in haste, Isla disappeared through the door. Mal let out a laugh once he'd gently shut the door behind them, catching the jacket blown open by wind and giving it a good zip as he caught up with her. He shot her a guilty grin as Isla's shoulders shook, and wondered if he should've just tried and put things out of his mind instead - but was glad when she'd cast a charm for comfort, seemingly dedicated to staying out. Remember that, for Helena. The proper sun was hidden behind the trees to the west already, but its soft orange could still be seen above the scraggy branches before giving way to gray, granting enough light for them to follow a freshly cleared path. He scanned across the way as she lit a ciggy, comforted by the contented sounds coming from the nearby coop as the chickens settled in for the night. "Hey." Mal laughed and resigned himself to the knowledge that any attempts at subtlety were obvious as the nose on his face, given that he'd been completely seen through by a witch twice in as many days. "We might see them. You never know." Alright, it'd been a weak excuse from the get. Bless her, though, for coming with him anyway. "But, er - yeah, I - I wanted to ask your take on something. There's - " He beamed, hardly able to believe that he had such news to share. "There's a girl, this absolutely incredible girl. Her name's Helena. I ran into her the other day, right ahead of my interview, she gave me the last bit of good luck I needed. We got to talking, and, well, now she's coming here to see me after Christmas. I can't wait to see her again, Isla."
Since he'd last seen Helena, he'd had his first interview for the Charms school, written her back-and-forth, been caught up with holiday cleaning and cooking, and then kept busy with everyone's descent today...In the little quiet moments he'd found, though, mostly before falling asleep - he'd started getting into his head. Was asking her to come and visit a selfish thing for him to do? When the most they could see each other over the next term would be a scant few hours in Hogsmeade every month, if she could make the trips up, if she wanted to? Would it have been wiser to keep up an exchange of owls until he was out of the castle for good, and able to offer her more? The thoughts and questions circled, and every once and a while Malcolm did remind himself that this was their first time planning to see each other, so anything could happen, he hadn't been able to quiet them yet. Planning ahead had helped him with a good many things. Something as unexpected as Helena possibly fancying him back, though? Never saw that coming. "I - er - I've fancied her for ages, never thought she'd thought about me too. And now we're here...and I'm back to school in a week, she graduated last term."

“Heyyy.” Isla mocked her cousin good-naturedly, nudging his shoulder with hers as they walked. “Oh posh! If we see a fox I’ll sing on one foot while balancing a glass of wine on my head.” She was just trying to put her younger cousin at ease, a spot of joking usually did the trick. The rest he had to come to on his own and luckily she didn't have to wait long. His smile, bright and full of excitement, had her brows furrowing. Mal was a good-natured sort and was often seen with a grin but this was something altogether different for him. It had Isla paying very close attention to what he said next because she had a feeling… And her suspicions were correct, it was a girl! Instantly, Isla was so happy for Malcolm, and her mind went to work on Helena, Helena… ”Helena who? Mal that’s so great! Whats her surname? What house is she in? What’s she look like? I bet she's a stunner!” She came up short, pulling her partner around to face her properly. If Isla had any hope of placing this girl she needed this information. Because though she was very excited for her cousin, she was secondarily concerned. Not in a serious way, more in a protective way. Overall, she was thrilled and that is the emotion she expressed in spades. “Oh Mally Rabby! You’re smitten.” she thrilled, giving him a tight hug. Isla linked her arm with his, resuming their stroll at a glacial pace - it was much too cold to stand still for too long. “Of course, she thought about you.” she interrupted, again, as he went on. Mal was a catch and she didn’t just think that because they were related. He genuinely was a gem of a human being. The second part of his statement had her heart sinking a little. “I see the dilemma. A restricted long-distance relationship can be daunting.” Not that she had any experience in that particular department. What she did have experience in was optimism and problem solving . “But not impossible. Could make it even more fun. You know they say absence makes the heart grow fonder.” She said with a cheeky grin, taking a pull off of her fag and adding a more serious note. “Honestly, if you’re both willing to see where it goes, work a little for it, then I don’t see a problem at all. The school year is half over already! She can come to see you on weekends, and you’ll visit her the next holiday. And you’ll write, all the time, I’m sure.”
