Natalie knew she had nothing to be jealous of. She was born into a wealthy pureblood family, she had everything she wanted handed to her. But she wasn’t Ethan. And her mother, oh how she loved Ethan. Natalie had heard the story many times, of the vision of Ethan her mother had had. Ethan was important, he was going to fight in the war. Natalie? There were no visions of her, and yet she was still saddled with a ridiculous middle name. Natalie considered herself to be many things, but she was no goddess of love and beauty.
But a girl needs her mother, and when your mother’s head is always in the clouds you find other people to look up to. As jealous as she was of Ethan, she looked up to him. He was the best example of what her father wanted from them, and the years they spent together at home were good. She listened to what he had to say, she did as she was told, and she looked forward to the day where she could step outside of the box that had been so carefully crafted for her. Ethan went away to school, and for a whole year she avoided both of her parents, waiting for her chance.
It finally came, and she was whisked off to Hogwarts with her older brother. Sorted into Slytherin, Natalie knew this was her chance to thrive. And for the first time, her relationship with Ethan started to get rocky. She stopped listening to everything he told her to do, and started to think for herself. She made friends in other houses, and started to think that maybe the pureblood ideology she had grown up in was wrong. The first time she dated a halfblood, she thought Ethan’s head was going to explode. Away at school, away from her mother’s daydreams and her father’s harsh expectations, she was free to be, with only Ethan to answer to.
It was when she turned sixteen that things took a turn at home. Suddenly her mother was more interested in her, convinced that her daughter was a Seer like she was. She started claiming Natalie was having visions, and Natalie didn’t know what to do. She knew it ran in their family, that most women had that gift, but she’d never had anything close to a vision in her life. And with her father locking her mother away from her visions, it wasn’t something Natalie wanted. She was less jealous of Ethan getting their mother’s attention once it was focused on her, and she hid away as often as she could.
Her seventh year was to be her last in the safety of the castle, and Natalie wanted to savor it. She knew after school a life of marriage and babies awaited her, once her father decided on a partner for her. If she wasn’t careful, and her father believed her mother, then she knew she faced a life locked away from anyone and everyone she held dear. There had to be some way to break free, right?
