Back Story
"If you do a good thing for a selfish reason, is it really still that good of a thing?"
"Don't ever hear complaints when I'm out there saving lives, Mum. What, I can't come 'round to tell you when I've made the Prophet anymore?"
"Of course not, we love to see you and hear of your work, we're just concerned - "
"About what? I'm good at what I do, I've worked hard to get there, and I'm recognized for it! We've all got agendas, just kidding yourself to deny that -"
"But being the first in, before the experts - "
"I am an expert! You don't have to fuss, I'm fine, it's part of the job - "
"Only because you want it to be. What happens when you're not so lucky?"
"Hope to be lucky enough that those I've gone in to save still make it out. Merlin's sake - what do you expect me to do? Hold myself back and let someone else die so I don't get singed?"
Bilius had gone into the field hoping to join the staff at international Quidditch matches. Tend wounds, get to know his childhood heroes, ear to the ground on all things to place the best bets - what could be better?
But as that's what half of every incoming class of Mediwizards wants, well - disappointment can be turned to opportunity with the right attitude, yeah? And responding to calls from a slew of Ministry Departments - Law Enforcement, Magical Accidents and Catastrophes, Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures, Magical Transportation (and yes, on the very rare occasion, Magical Games and Sports) - kept every shift interesting, and every call worthwhile. So was it his fault that he cared so much that, sometimes, he didn't let the full briefing settle in before he took action? Was it really on him that he gave a better interview than most of his colleagues? And, truly, one couldn't berate him for being naturally photogenic. So what if a few years in, he was getting a big head? Someone in the family out to have a bit of showmanship and confidence!
That said, goody-two-shoes Arthur going off and eloping with Molly Prewett did wonders in shifting Bill's prior notions about him. There was a rebellious streak in there - smothered under the compulsive dogoodery but there nonetheless.
Bill just enjoyed its constant presence in himself, is all.
On days that were slow, on days when things didn't go their way, he struggled with keeping troublesome thoughts at bay. Loops could so easily run through his mind when it was idle - arguments with loved ones where maybe he actually had been in the wrong, failures in the field, wondering if he was the next Weasley brother to be tapped on the shoulder to join the wrong side - and so he did his best to avoid idleness. Keeping busy with conversation, a night out or a night in not complete without friends, family, or a woman to spend it with... Bill was known to overcompensate for a rough day with a rougher night of drink, but as long as he couldn't dwell, there wasn't a problem, right?
He was lucky to have Roderick in the next room, the younger Healer both a stabilizing presence and thrower of a grand party. And somehow, he'd not managed to screw up enough to scare Annette away, her optimism and earnest joy for life bringing a much needed light to a universe that could seem so bleak when faced with what its worst could do to the innocent. When she slowed him down, the loops weren't so loud, sometimes staying off the track entirely.
Their community, they were all just trying to make a difference in the ways that they could. Arthur and Annette and their relentless pushing of laws they knew wouldn't get passed, but would at least be spoken about in the circles who needed to hear about them, an idea much harder to kill than a man. The family of fighters relentlessly at work to take down the Great Evils of their time, but still showing up for birthday parties, compartmentalizing far better than he could. His fellows at Mungo's and in his Unit, doing everything in their power to save whoever found themselves in their care, regardless of circumstance. If they could all make shifts where they could - one day it would be enough for things to change, really change, wouldn't it?
