Back Story:
To put it simply, she was handed the perfect life, wasn’t she? The gift of being pureblood, of being important, of being in Slytherin.
She hated every second of it.
At first, life was wonderful and simple. She had Bella, who always looked out for her, and Narcissa, who she felt truly understood her. They were a formidable team, the three of them. Many years were spent with Bella in their music room, her on piano and Bella on violin. She rode horses with Narcissa as often as she was able. She did everything she was told to do, she followed the rules laid out for her. Andromeda Black was, by all accounts, the perfect pureblood daughter.
The early years of magic were often focused on taking care of both of her sisters, Bella always had a tendency to injure herself, and Andy knew how to fix a broken bone. She was always there to heal any cuts or bumps that happened to Narcissa. Healing came so naturally to her, and from a young age, she knew what she wanted to do with her life. However, she also knew what was expected of her.
When she went off to Hogwarts, it was no surprise to be sorted into Slytherin. She loved learning, and she flourished in school. She followed Bella’s lead and didn’t talk to those who were “lesser” than she was. In truth, it wasn’t until she even went to school that she began to meet people that weren’t deemed worthy of her time. It seemed strange to her though, to be so casually cruel to others for something that was beyond their control.
It was perfect when Narcissa finally joined them at school. They were together again, as they should be. No one could stand in their way, not when they were together and they had their allies. Rodolphus Lestrange had been a fixture in her life for as long as she could remember, betrothed to Bella. She found him strange, but Bella loved him and he was a good person to have on their side. So was his brother, Rabastan, perhaps just as odd as his older brother. She knew there would be a day when she was also betrothed to someone - Bella had Rodolphus, Rabstan had Annette (who Andy liked, even if Rab didn’t). She’d never thought her betrothal would be to Lucius Malfoy.
He was pompous, and they didn’t get along. It was the main reason there had been no formal announcement about it, both of them writing home to their families that they disliked each other quite passionately. Ultimately, it was decided that it didn’t matter what they wanted, a marriage between the Blacks and the Malfoy’s would be good, and couldn’t they just try to be friends. Surprisingly, she found that underneath the asshole she’d known there was a genuine person, and while there was never anything romantic between them, she appreciated having him on her side.
Fifth-year though, suddenly everything was different. While she’d always known Bella to be cruel, it was the first time she started to question it. Bella adored that Lucius and Andromeda were prefects, she expected them to not question when she broke the rules. Lucius turned a blind eye, and Andy struggled but knew exactly how Bella would treat her if she dared to step out of line. It was fine - until she met Ted. It was her third year volunteering at the Hospital Wing, but her first as one of the aid members during Quidditch games. That’s how she met him when he’d sustained an injury and she was the one sent to help.
He was a year older than her, and although she’d seen him around the Hospital Wing in her time at school, she’d never spoken to him. It hadn’t even crossed her mind to talk to him, because while she knew very little about Edward Tonks - she did know he was a muggle-born. But on that fateful Quidditch day, when she had to keep him talking to make sure there wasn’t any more serious of an injury than a head bump. He was funny and charming, and she was so taken with him. It was a bad idea to want to get to know him more, but working together in the Hospital Wing provided a level of privacy that they wouldn’t have in the rest of the school.
Simple conversations turned to flirting over patients, and Andromeda knew that it was a bad idea to fall for him. That didn’t stop it though, and she was sure she had driven Orla crazy talking about her feelings for Ted. But who else could she talk to about this, it wasn’t as if she could tell Bella or Narcissa! It was already hard enough to turn a blind eye to Bella’s antic’s when she no longer believed in the same things her sister did. All Bella could talk about was dark things, cruel things, like her desire to join up with the Dark Lord after school. It was all Bella had talked about since the summer dinner she had attended. All Andromeda could do was worry that she’d be the next one invited, and how was she supposed to turn down that when she was expected to follow in her older sister’s footsteps?
By Christmas that year, Andromeda felt like the two parts of her life were going to tear her into pieces. She loved Bellatrix, her sister had always had Andromeda’s best interests in mind, hadn’t she? And Narcissa, the sweet baby of the family, Andromeda couldn’t lose her. On the other hand, she never wanted to give up the friendships she’d found in Ted, Orla, and Braxton. Even if she did want more than just friendship with Ted, so much that her heart ached. Christmas Day was always such a busy family affair, but no one would miss her for just a few hours, not when she was going to visit her dear friend Orla.
That was how she ended up outside Edward Tonk’s house, determined to do something. What, she wasn’t quite sure. It was confusing because usually, it was her who was doing the flirting - until he was on pain meds and he was flirting and she was blushing - and that memory was what had brought her here. She realized after she knocked that she probably should have given Ted some sort of warning, given it was Christmas. It was her luck that Ted answered the front door, and before she could get caught up in her thoughts she told him she was most certainly in love with him.
She knew it was ridiculous, and she was quite ready to be laughed off the porch - until she wasn’t. And it was bonkers, telling a boy you were in love with him and then meeting his very muggle and lovely parents. They were doctors, she learned, and it was hard not to tease Ted about healing running in the family. They also were gracious enough to offer her a room for the night, although she and Ted were up late snuggling on the couch, and then the next thing she knew it was morning. She stayed as long as she felt was safe to risk it, before going home to spin a story about Orla needing her to go and visit Longbottom Hall to see Braxton. It wasn’t entirely a lie, she did go to Longbottom Hall. It was just with Ted, who happened to be visiting.
Keeping it under wraps while they were on holiday was one thing, but it was entirely different to keep it a secret at school. Thankfully, Orla was actually quite a dear friend and was more than happy to cover for Andy’s frequent trips to Ravenclaw Tower. Two years as Ted’s girlfriend flew by faster than she would have liked. He was still a secret from her family, although Andy thought that Narcissa had suspicions that Andromeda was seeing someone. She knew Ted hated the sneaking around, but it was a necessary evil of their relationship.
Summer came - and so did the fight. He was starting a year-long Healer training, and she was going back to school. He wouldn’t want to wait for her. He felt like she was ashamed of him, and he was sick of hiding, and that they had no future. That part probably hurt the most, and she spent the night in her room with Narcissa, sobbing and telling her youngest sister about the secret relationship she’d had that was now over. Bella no longer lived at home, and she knew her younger sister would keep this secret, especially seeing as the relationship was in the past.
Good news came that summer in the form of a Head Girl pin, and praise from her parents. It also came in the form of bad news, in that talks with the Malfoy’s were becoming more than talks. Lucius was Head Boy, and so it didn’t seem strange for them to have a meeting that summer. It was then she decided she was going to run - and she needed his help to do it. Lucius - who had admitted to her more than once his attraction to Narcissa - was more than willing to help. He started moving money into a fund for her, and she started researching muggle flats and ways to escape.
Seventh year was fairly uneventful, which she was thankful for. She spent time with her sister and friends she had made in Ravenclaw in the past two years of going to their tower. She plotted her escape with Lucius, and her heart ached every day for Ted. Her work in the hospital wing wasn’t the same without him around, and while she owled Orla regularly, she hadn’t spoken to Ted since they’d called it quits. The one shining light was the fact her parents - thanks to Bella’s insistence, the one thing she could thank her older sister for - they wanted her to pursue a career in Healing. It would be good for the cause, and she hated nothing more than thinking about that.
Graduation came and went, and then came the news of announcing an engagement in the Prophet. She knew she had to leave soon before there was no escaping it at all, and as luck would have it her first day of training she ran, quite literally, into Ted. Seeing him again after a year apart was like taking a breath of fresh air when you thought you were drowning, and it was that night she met with Lucius. He gave her money, and after everyone was asleep she left a note and she ran.
I’m leaving, with no plans to return. Please don’t look for me, I no longer wish to be part of this family. I’m sorry, and I hope one day you can understand.
She thought the next morning, Bellatrix would be banging on the door of the flat she had secretly rented, that Narcissa would send an owl begging her to reconsider. But neither of those things happened. She heard later that Bellatrix had gone to her Aunt’s house, and blasted her face off the family tapestry. Good. It didn’t matter that she was alone, she had made the right choice. Muggles weren’t lesser than she was by any means, and over the next couple of months, she was so grateful for her muggle neighbor’s kindness to her.
The other highlight of her new life was seeing Ted again regularly, even if they were in different programs. He was on the fourth floor most days, while she floated about the hospital training as a Mediwizard. It was enough though to know that there was still something there, underneath the hurt of it all. It wasn’t long before they were back together - and publicly. Not in hiding, not sneaking around, they were free to just be. Then the unexpected happened, and there was suddenly a baby to consider. She never doubted for a second that she was meant to be a mother to Ted’s child, and now years later the three of them are quite a happy family.
